1Will Never Purchase A Philips Product Again
By Badger
Bought one of these 2 days after Thanksgiving and had a good experience with it for a month. Two days after Christmas I heard a noise like a pebble striking a windshield. I turned from the kitchen to see the picture closing as if a movie were fading to black, only it wasn't a movie. The plasma display had cracked. The actual exterior screen is intact but the display beneath it has been compromised. Philips says that it isn't covered by them - that I must have "done something to it". I'd also like to echo the sentiments of many other reviews on Amazon and elsewhere - their customer service is absolutely awful. Unfortunately I am unable to give this item a zero stars rating.

5Excellent Television
By Falcontech
I recently purchased this TV from Sam's Club for $994.00 and am very pleased with my purchase. The resolution is great and the colors are very true to life. The black quality is excellent and the controls are extremely easy to use with the menu system being a breeze to navigate through. The setup was simple and the included stand was rock solid. I haven't viewed any HD broadcasts yet as I don't have HD cable but Digital cable, DVD's and VHS's look crystal clear. I would recommend this TV to anyone.

1Avoid Phillips TV's - bad product and customer service
By G. Nelson
Save yourself a headache and avoid this product and all Philips Plasma's. If you take your chances and buy a Philips plasma, you might as well buy the extended service contract as you will likely need it.I purchased the Philips 42in Plasma TV a little over a year ago and it started showing a thin red line vertically in the middle of the screen at about month 11. It was still under warranty and called customer service. The repair shop picked it up a few days later. This was in the beginning of December. It is now March and they have replaced several parts without fixing it.Here is the current workflow.1. Repair shop orders a part from Philips.2. Philips reviews the order to decide whether or not to give permission to ship the part since it is under Warranty.3. Philips reviews the order and eventually gives permission to send the part. (this seems to take 3 weeks each time)4. The part arrives 7-10 days later.Part doesn't fix the TV and it starts all over.Customer service has no way to track the status because it is in a different system. The repair shop has no way of tracking it because philips has to give them an Order number and this doesnt happen until they give permission to ship the part.Anyhow, when you call customer service, their only function is to tap dance around until you get aggravated and bored and get off the phone. They may promise callbacks, but it never happens. I even got one of their supervisors to admit that they provide service, but not good service.I have a friend with the comparable Samsung that he got at about the same time and it works fine. Also I have anotehr friend with the Sony and it works pretty well, but pricier.I have never had a TV break in the less than a year, but this one did and a neighbor purchased one as well and it lasted only 15 months was too costly to fix.Picture actually wasnt bad. just poor quality.

5No Fuss, No Buzz, No Problems
By Dectective-Duck
I've had the unit for about 1.5 months now. Before I purchased the unit, I read numerous reviews about others hearing a "Buzzing" noise. In life, I work as a Detective/Investigator, so, I dove in deep on what to buy. I shopped everywhere from Sears Electronics, Best Buy, Local Television Electronics shops. I finally purchased the unit about 3 weeks later from ABC Warehouse (They gave the best price). Plus, I personally didn't want to shell out 1800 bucks for my TV and have to risk damage during delivery. Pay for a unit you have to wait for and then risk it arriving broken?! Not for me. :) Every place I shopped, I could hear "NO BUZZING". I inquired about the buzz with the folks at Samsung as well as a local Repair shop. I was told it's due to outside interference. The unit comes with 3 cylinder type filters that need to be PROPERLY placed around both ends of the POWER CORD. There is an instruction leaflet in the paperwork. However, it's in 'Metric' so I gave it the 'ol college try and had no problem with placement. I purchased a Dual Arm Articulating Wall Mount from Ebay for 80 bucks with free shipping, (Awesome Mount!), I Called over a friend to help me lift the screen into place and WOW!!! So much better than my LG - 55" LCD TV - 1080p. The Samsung has "Beautiful RGB Colors, Rich Black/Dark colors, with No haze in the picture". I have a ceiling fan with light that you can barely see in the reflection from the screen. Their anti-glare is great! And the plus, I HEAR NO BUZZING!!!! Now, I don't know if this plays a factor, but I do have the system running through a HTIB (Home Theater in a Box) LG Blu-Ray system. But the fact is, I hear no buzzing or any other annoying sound. It has an Awesome Picture and is very user friendly. I did notice that on the "Dynamic" setting, "Reds" where slightly higher than I would prefer. Problem solved by going into the Picture Menu. Easy Peasy! My set up is as follows, Samsung PN58C590 58-Inch 1080p Plasma, Dish Network HDTV, LG Home Theater Blu-Ray Disk system, and an Xbox 360. All connected and running flawlessly.

5Great TV.
By Rmmoll
Its big and vivid. It doesn't have some of the thrills of its more expensive cousins, however for the price it had everything you need in a reliable and beautiful picture TV. Very happy with our purchase.

5Highly recommended plasma
By Mike Colwell
I would consider myself an enthusiast, and always strive for the best it can be. That said, this Samsung Plasma is highly recommended. I replaced a rear-pro DLP, and this Samsung betters it in every way. The blacks are inky, sometimes fading into the piano black frame, the colors are saturated, and very accurate, with much detail. Others have commented about buzz, but none heard on my unit. Also, others have observed a pinkish cast, which I did, as well, but Samsung has given us a lot of picture adjustments, and white level balance is also a user menu adjustment, not in the service menu. I was able to get pure whites here, and the images are now correct. The 24p playback does not elimate judder, but switching it off in the BD player solves this with no degradation observed in the image, but it now is smooth. I'd give this display an "11" if the 24p worked, but it is still 5 stars worthy. Highly recommended!

5Excellent piece of equipment
By A Customer
I've recently purchased this rear projection television and I'm very impressed to say the least. I've owned a Samsung 40 rear projection prior to this, which was also a very good TV, but nothing compared to this JVC bad boy. Some nice features include a DVI jack for future (some present) digital connections, a center channel input (although I've tried it and the sound is less than acceptable, perhaps its my receiver), numerous multiscreen displays including dual tuning for split screen, and most importantly exceptional picture quality. I believe it's the internal line doubler that creates such sharp pictures, or so they say. The clarity is really astounding for a projection TV, and what's more, the clarity is not limited to HDTV broadcasts, but the picture on regular cable is amazing as well. Let's face it, most of us do not spend most of our TV viewing time having access to HDTV broadcasts and receivers. Albeit a fortunate handful, but for the rest of us this television has excellent picture quality across the board. I highly suggest watching the Monsters Inc. dvd with a player using component connections. The clarity is breathtaking, many picutres truly appear to be 3 dimensional. But instead of relying solely on reviews, go out to your local electronics store, and take a look for yourself at this television against other manufacturers. And don't listen to large chain store electronics sales employees, they don't know what they're talking about. Happy shopping!

4JVC AV-48WP30
By Ronald Gmiterek
Just got it on Saturday July 13, 2002.The picture is amazing. The only downfall is, to have that amazing picture, you have to watch DVD's. I have BEV as a satellite supplier. Most of the channels are clear, except for some, it seems the picture is too big for the channel. Now, I've upgrade from a 10 year old JVC 27" (Best TV I've ever had). The picture just looks huge, I'm sitting approx. 11 feet away. The ideal viewing distance is suppose to be 9.5 feet. It's just so huge. Now, that may just be because I upgraded from a lot smaller to a lot bigger TV.I've watched approx. 10 movies on it, and WOW, I would never be able to watch them on anything else (unless it's bigger).Other little tidbits, is that when the movie is in letterbox (2.35:1), you still have the black lines on the top and the bottom. You can zoom in even more, but then you lose some of the picture. (my wife is very disapointed with this). To use the full screen when you are watching a 4:3 tv show or movie, the picture seems a little bit stretched, just takes a little of getting use too.If you are watching the TV from angles greater than 30 to 40 degrees, you really can't see very much.Besides what I've mentioned, it is a great TV for a great price, and a big plus, you can use the speakers for the Center channel of your receiver.I've also played my PS2 and XBox on it, it just blows your mind how detailed the games are now.I'm also having a technician coming in to make all the fine tuning on the TV (I don't want to lose the warranty, if I do it myself). So I will let you know if it makes it even better.I would give this TV a four and a half star, it lost its half a star because of the things I've mentioned above. And that is an assesment based on three days of having it. Give me a year, and I'll let you know if it has improved.

5Worth Every Penny
By William Carroll
...For me, this TV is everything I want and more. Great picture? Check. Spend a little time learning how to calibrate it or buy the excellent AVIA disc from Amazon. Great sound? Check. It would sound better connected to surround sound, but it does a pretty good job in my living room? Easy connections? Check. About a million of them, including component video, connections in front for video camera or games, and the (boo hiss) DVI - the latest copy protection [stuff]. But if there is copy protection [stuff] coming, you'd better have it. The TV looks great in any room - not cheap particle board like many. Good remote. Easy to set up. I have nothing bad to say about the JVC ... so if this is what you're looking for, easy and good, you've found it.

4Doesn't Claim to be 1080P

If you read the technical specifications, it clearly states that this television is 1080i, not 1080P. This is why we research before we buy.

5May not be 'TRUE' 1080p, but GREAT picture.....
By D. Berry II
This TV looks so much better than the 720p 50" plasmas for me, it was a no brainer. Most 'true' 1080p plasmas start about $1000 more than this TV, LCD's at 50" cost 5X as much. I really can't tell a difference between this Hitachi and the 'true' 1080p plasmas, if you can, your eyes are better than mine. You can save $400 to $500 by getting a 720p 50" plasma, but you will sacrifice some in resolution. Go compare them side by side, just make sure the inputs at the store are 1080p resolution to show the difference. I am VERY HAPPY with this TV. I bought it for $2000 4/5/07, look around and you can find this price.

5Big picture, not so big price
By Auntie Dee Dee
Just had this delivered two days ago and am totally pleased with the picture and I don't even have the HDreceiver hooked up yet. If you didn't want or expect to get HD, still get this set as the standard def picture istremendous. I am not a technophobe nor audiophile so I found it a bit puzzling to get access from dvd, ps2 orwhy the picture wouldn't come back on, but a little fumbling and I did finally catch on. Totally my fault. Thesound is good for me, I'm not looking to be launched towards the back wall with monster sound. I saved more than $1,000 from my next choice, so there's still Christmas in this house!

5Very Pleased With This Sharply-Focused TV
By Beth Fox
I've owned this TV monitor for six months now, and I am delighted with my purchase. I had been searching for a flat-screen TV that was reasonably-priced and had a good, sharp picture. I compared this TV in a store to several others in its price range. This was the clear winner. It has a beautiful picture and great sound. (I am pleased that my TV has no dead pixels, either.)This is a monitor, not a TV, so you do need a cable box. I have a digital HD box through Adelphia cable. The HD channels on this TV are outstanding. The persons on screen might as well be standing in front of you. I have never tried to use this as a computer monitor, so I cannot speak to how it would work, but it is a wonderful TV. And, despite Westinghouse's reputation for having bad remotes, the remote control on this TV works well. It is very easy to switch from HDTV to regular TV.All in all, I am delighted. My only regret is not having bought a larger Westinghouse TV -- but that would have meant paying much more!

5Other reviewers don't do it justice
By Agata
I just purchased this TV, and I am very pleased with it. I did not expect fancy features and surround-like sound, but a basic LCD TV that was inexpensive and expandable. I actually like the fact that it doesn't have a built-in HDTV tuner - that lets the price stay low (I will call up my cable company to upgrade to HDTV in a few days). Without HDTV, the picture quality isn't the best when you're close up, but with HDTV (as I saw in the store) it's just as great as the more expensive brands. The salesman told me how customers come back and complain about the picture quality, but this kind of TV is made to be used with HDTV (evident with the display model they had). The sound isn't bad - it's good enough for this price (for reviewers who complain about this - you get what you pay for, and if you want better sound quality, go for a more expensive model). My set has no dead pixels at all, and unlike what others said, the remote works fine. The menu can get a bit confusing to use, but it's manageable. The documentation is minimal, but you can probably find more info on it online. Overall, I am very happy for finding an LCD for such a low price (I went to J&R for it - great service, the set is priced at $799.99 in store and $699.99 on their site, they were happy to give it to me for the online price). I recommend it for people who really want an LCD but can't afford one over $1,000. I'm looking forward to getting HDTV, and enjoying years with this LCD TV.

1Looks nice...sounds AWFUL..
By Jennifer A. Bogucki
Just purchased & RETURNED this tv. We were thrilled when we took it out of the box..until we set it up. The sound is AWFUL. The sound waves from very low to extremely loud - so loud that it actually makes a popping noise. And, no it wasn't only when commercials came on - it is continuous. Unfortunately for us I did not do any sort of research before purchasing the tv. Now that I've put in a couple of searches on this tv, I see that I wasn't the only person who had issues with the sound. It seems to be the #1 complaint on this model. It is unfortunate because Westinghouse is a good name brand. We did return this set and purchase a slightly more expensive model that is not a Westinghouse. Hope this helped out.

5Great picture......Great Sound.......HUGE!!!!!!!!!!
By Nikki
We bought this model in 2003. It performs today just as it did the day it was delivered to our home. This television (both size and viewing screen) is huge! We went from a 32" tv to this giant. Images are life-size. You definitely need to have space between your sofa and the screen.Watching sports games and movies are like you're in the stadium or the theater, so get your hot dogs, nachos and popcorn.I would definitely recommend this model. We live in a smaller place now, so we're trying to sell our set. But if you have the space, its a guaranteed winner.

5Excellant buy
By Don
We bought ours 5 years ago. If you are into sports and nature TV you can't beat this. You are right on the field or rink with the players or the wildlife. The one thing I would caution about is that your TV viewing will increase. High Definition makes everything you watch an experience and the size definitely only enhances it. You do need to have 12 to 15 feet minimum of room between your seating and the set to really enjoy this. A room 18 to 20 feet in depth is ideal. A good surround system also makes a world of difference as most high def is also broadcast in 5.1 surround. You can pack a lot of people around this TV and with the Olympics coming up we expect to be sharing our house a lot. In 5 years we have not ever thought of replacing this set as the quality has not diminished.

5Best TV I've ever owned....Still has a great picture
By G. S. Johnson
I bought my Hitachi 65SWX20B in the fall of 2002, and over 10 years later it works just like new. It has never had a service problem. It is my primary television and gets lots of use (5-8 hours daily). It has 1080I capability so the HD picture is very clear. I actually prefer the picture over some of the newer flat screens. The one drawback is the size of the cabinet, but mine has been built into a wall since first installed, so all I see is the 65-inch screen. Whatever Hatachi did in designing and manufacturing this television, they sure did it right !!

5For the price, GREAT HDTV
By niwert
I got this TV for myself in December 2009. It has been about six months now, so I thought a review might help someone else who is looking at this or similar TVs. I got it from my local Costco and paid $540.00, which was and still is pretty good for a 42" HDTV.The picture quality is absolutely awesome. I have an older, 2002, 1080i Toshiba 65" projection in the house which has provided some excellent viewing over the years. I was somewhat reluctant to buy a 720p because I was concerned about detecting the difference in 1080 and 720. Let me just say that it is now almost painful to try to watch the 65" TV as compared to the Panasonic upstairs. I have a Blue-ray player hooked up to each and the difference in picture quality is noticeable, which I attribute to the differences in technology (projection v. plasma).I was also concerned with glare on the plasma since the room it is in has two windows. The TV is in the corner with a window about 3 feet to the left of the TV and another window on the opposite wall pointing right at the TV. We don't watch a lot of TV during the day, but when I have watched something I have been really surprised that I cannot really catch a glare from either window at all. This model doesn't have a lot of extra's to it. Only two HDMI ports, it has VIERA and not VIERA CAST so there is no internet connectivity, the SD card slot reads VERY slowly (which suggested that trying to connect to some of the various internet capabilities that other models and brands offer would probably be equally as slow). If you have a Blue-ray hooked up to it that has some internet connectivity options or a computer that can actually surf the net, which I have both, then all you really need is the TV to look at.Only bad thing is the remote has taken some getting used to, but that is mostly because I am still used to the previous TVs remote I think.Hope this helps.

5So far so good with this set
By PhillyTurboSix
I just got this set FREE with the purchase of some furniture at Ashley's furniture in Philadelphia. Easy to set up. Easy to use. Other then it being heavy because it's a plasma I'm happy with it all around. I have Comcast HD cable. The audio is pretty good as well. I just picked up a JVC set that I'm not crazy over the stock sound system but this set sounds good enough all by it's self.

5Great TV and Great Price
By Habs11
I got this spring 2010 for about $425. The HD picture is great. I have Time Warner cable on other TV's and for this TV I just have a COAX cable running directly into the TV (no cable box). Most of the channels look good. If you view from close - say 5 feet - the standard def channels are not great... but this is mounted to wall and I watch from bed (about 12 feet) so it serves me just fine. Somehow the signal passed to the TV does allow some HD stations. For example NBC is channel 10 and is standard definition... when i hit the channel up button the set goes to channel 10.1 10.1 is the HD version of NBC. The HD picture is fantastic. I would purchase again and I do recommend to others.
