4Great Value
By Michael D. Barton
Typically when there is a fanboy war over LCDs, the fight comes down between Samsung and Sony. Sonys are usually hailed as having better blacks while Samsungs [aka Sammys] are cited as having more accurate color.I had a 46V4100 [last year's V-Series a step higher than this S-series] and found it was a solid performer that was plagued by uneven backlight issues. After researching several sets, I decided to give Sony another chance. At some point when buying an HDTV you have to accept that there will be compromises. For a "entry level" set, the S5100 does not disappoint. Yes, SD content looks sketchy because of the huge amounts of upscaling that take place. That's true on any 1080p set. And the compression that the cable and satellite companies use mean you will see blocky compression artifacts around the edges of some HD content. But from a picture standpoint, the colors are accurate, the shadow detail is good and the viewing angle for an LCD is outstanding.Physically, the set is handsome in a functional way but doesn't have any design pizzazz. Also, the bezel is reflective. I know manufacturers do this so their products look "nice and shiny" but the position of the set in my room causes a noticeable glare on the left bezel- I thought it was severe backlight bleed until I looked more closely. The screen itself is glossier than most LCD screens- not as reflective as a plasma but it will still throw a reflection at you. Probably not the best choice for a room with lots of direct sunlight. I have the TV in a room under a ceiling fan and the reflection is noticeable but not distracting. However, the reflection is nowhere near as diffuse as you'd expect from an LCD.I think this reflective screen helps with the viewing angle, though. I'm sitting 6 feet to the left and 2 feet in front of the TV and the colors are almost as vivid as if I were sitting directly in front. This is a rare LCD that can challenge a plasma on viewing angle. Usually you get 50 degrees off center from an LCD and your picture is washed out.Sony's xcross [pronounced "cross"] menu system [used on the PS3 AND PSP] is not on the S5100. I don't consider that a big loss and you do get a remote button called "tools" that lets you get to commonly used functions without using the menu. The interface is attractive and easy to use.The TV has plenty of connectivity. 3 HDMI, PC input [9 pin, not DVI], 2 component in, digital audio digital audio out... you get the idea. 2 of the HDMI ports and the PC input are on the left side of the panel, recessed far enough to protect the plugs. Seems like a strange design choice. Finally, I will admit that there are some minor backlight issues [2 "flashlight" areas] but unlike the V4100, I have to look at them to notice them.If you want a big set and you're on a budget, this is definitely a set worth looking at. I will warn you that it is very basic- there are NO extras on the TV. So SD slot, no internet connectivity, no picture in picture, no Motionflow 120/240Those aren't issues for me. In my opinion, most of those "features" exist to allow TV manufacturers to roll new TVs out each year and build in profit margin at then expense of people who want toys. I'm willing to bet that as a pure picture and sound experience [ie no MotionFlow] this set is the equal of the V5100 series for $200-$500 less.PS- I apologize for not being able to review the sound but I have the set connected to a receiver.

5Nice TV for the price!
By X
I'm not a big TV person, so I can't compare this TV to others. I actually purchased this TV to play my PS3 on it, which is great!!!!! The games at 1080p look absolutely flawless. I can't really make a lot of comments about the functions, but there are a lot of them. Everything looks great and for the price it's great, and it's a SONY!Three months later, here is a review update:This is still a good TV, especially when I purchased it 3 months ago. However, over the course of 3 months the HDMI connections started doing some weird things. My set up is very simple: HDMI 1 is connected to my Digital Cable, HDMI 2 is connected to my SONY PS3 and HDMI 3 is connected to my SONY DVD upscale player. The problems I started having was the HDMI connections weren't reading the signals sent by each component. At first I though it was the digital cable, because I stopped getting a signal. So, I had my cable company come out to my house three times and the last time they exchanged the digital DVR cable box with a new one. However, I noticed that when I turned on my DVD upscale using the "Bravia" features, I could no longer get a signal from my digital cable. So I unplugged the HDMI 1 (digital cable) and connected it to HDMI 3 (DVD upscale), then I received a cable signal. Same thing was happening to my PS3 (HDMI 2). It was like the PS3 and the DVD player kept knock'en out the cable signal. So after hours of troubleshooting this ongoing problem, I realized, it wasn't my digital cable boxes, PS3 or DVD player, it was the TV itself and since it was over 90 days, since the day I purchased it, I couldn't return it to Wal-mart. So I called SONY and come to find out, SONY apparently knows about this problem. So SONY sent me a software update in the form of a USB drive. I received the USB drive, connected it to the back of the TV and the TV updated the software. The process took about 3 minutes and so far, everything is working fine.I guess the biggest problem I have with this situation is that, if SONY knows this TV need a software update, why don't they recall the TV or send the software update to each store that is selling the TV, so customers don't have to go through this madness? So I wrote this review to warn customers who's buying this TV and those who brought this TV of what to expect as you connect components to this TV using the HDMI ports over time. I would also recommend buying an extended warranty, just to be safe in the long run. I would also change my rating and give it 4 stars if I could, but I can't.

By nash123
Got the TV about two weeks ago, and have been somewhat satisfied. It took a while to get the SD channels look "OK" (sharpness down, etc), but I have concerns over the HD quality. HD channels are pretty good except when we have dark scenes. I get a lot of ghosting which I really hate seeing on a brand new TV. We have Comcast HD in Chicago, and we have really good HDMI cables. I applied the patch the day the TV came, and turned down the auto dim, and played around with all the picture settings including brightness, picture, sharpness... Anyone experiencing the same issues? I have yet to try a DVD - I only have a standard DVD player, maybe I should get a Blu-Ray player too...I had a Sony 42" Plasma (bought in 2004) before this and the dark scenes look much more grainy compared to my old TV on HD channels.I do not think I will return it but any comments to correct this issue during the return period are welcome.

5Great 60" LCD
By Larry Sawyer
I researched which new TV to get for several months. I went back and forth between Plasma and LCD or LED. I went to all the usual stores and looked at the TV's side by side, trying to figure out which picture I liked the best. For a larger TV (bigger than 55") I liked the Sony 60EX500 the best. The colors looked the most natural to me. Some of the LED sets, the colors seemed a bit too bright and exagerated.I have had the set about 5 days now, and I spent all Sunday watching TV. I watched a bunch of sports in HD. I watched some football that looked great. I watched some baseball that was so clean, it was better than being there. I watched some golf, and the details on the greens and course made me think I could read the puts as good as the caddies.I watched a couple episodes of Wild Russia with the kids, and the colors were so bright and clean, while the blacks were dark but didn't bleed at all. I even watched the 5th Element in HD, and was amazed at how great that movie still is all these years later.Overall, the picture quality is very clean and realistic. I was very impressed with the black levels of this set as well. To me, it had the best picture quality and features for the price.

4A lot of tv for the money.
By C. Shay
I did not buy this tv from Amazon.com but feel compelled to review it here. I had a five year old WEGA 60" that was 720p but top of the line in it's day. Three months out of my 5 year extended warranty a blue haze began to appear across the bottom of the screen. I called Sony and they informed me it was the dreaded optical engine failure. I could take photos, jump through a couple hoops and they would give me a new 40", a 46" for $250 or this 60" for $550.00. Once you go 60 there's no going back so it was this set we bought. It arrived very timely and so far we love it (and love those class-action law suits). I went onto the AVS Forum and found a tech who had calibrated this same set. I carefully copied all the settings and WOW! Lotsa' punchy, realistic color yet not glassy, or candy looking. Blacks are deep and various levels of black are very distinguishable. I know I made a worthwhile upgrade when I find myself rewatching all my blu-ray dvd's to catch the detail I was missing before.Only downside is sound. The old rear-projection lcd set had awesome sound. This thin model has little room for speakers and subwoofers. I have a surround sound system but will still invest soon in a small sound bar or some powered speakers for non-theater listening. Just hoping to set the record a little straighter. Sony customer service may have treated someone poorly but that shouldn't reflect on the review of this set. That's a review of their customer service. One last word. Careful calibration of any set can make a huge difference. Plan on doing it when you purchase a set.

4Great HDTV, Huge Screen
By SMcrossbay
I have had this tv for 1 1/2 years now. The lamp died about 2 weeks before the manufacturer's warranty was up so i got a free one. Mitsubishi was very easy to work with, I faxed them my original invoice gave them the serial number and they sent a new lamp in 4 days, no cost to us at all. We only paid $599 for this HDTV, got it brand new on clearance sale so we feel like we got a awesome deal on this. I STRONGLY suggest the purchase of extended warranties on these if possible, the lamps cost approx. $240 to replace. We now have another year and a half extended warranty from the store we bought it from that will cover any work, parts & labor and a one time lamp replacement (we were lucky to be able to have the manufacturer replace the first lamp:) Overall great product. I Like the fact that it allows each input to be adjusted with individual video & audio settings. This model has Picture-In-Picture capability, and our satalite reciever also has P.I.P so we have the ability to watch 4 programs(football games:) at the same time. HD programing is superb. I hook up my computer through the side S-Video panel to play online games and its awesome.Problems: Only problem we have had so far is the lamp going out. It still had 2 weeks left under Mitsubishi's one year warranty so they sent us a replacement through the mail with instructions on how to install, it was easy to install. Make sure you hang on to your original reciept/invoice in case of warranty issues and always register new products with the manufacturer. Some companies require you to register products with them in order to activate your warranty and if you don't register it they don't have to honer the warranty! Always read the fine print. Recently the lamp light came on again and it seemed the after only about 5-6 months the new lamps had died. When i took the lamp out the go get it replaced i noticed that it looked just fine. I plugged it back in, closed tha panel hit the reset button, and it has worked just fine for almost 2 weeks now. I called mitsubishi and they said if it was bad it would most likely looked like it blew up inside the lamp and the tv might give a false dead lamp light and in order to fix it you have to open the lamp panel, take out the lamp, re-insert it, close the panel(tv will not turn on with the panel open,) hit the reset button, then see if it works.

4Solid HD picture. NO reflections from screen!
By Aaron
This review is for anyone considering purchase of a used WD-62531 (or the related models like WD-62530), because I found very few reviews when buying one.I purchased a used WD-62531 and it has a solid picture for HD source material. I've had it for about a week. General impressions:* BIG screen* Good quality image with HD source material. Even at 720p, still makes me sit there and watch nature programs that are quite lifelike* Mediocre quality with SD sources. Stretch mode is bad and distractive, so I view in 4:3 ratio with black bars on sides* Compact cabinet, especially with the matching stand (base of TV slides into custom contouring on stand). Screen is not overly high from ground so no neck strain if sitting on floor. Slides very nicely into a corner of the room.* Wide viewing angles, horizontal & vertical* Absolutely NO reflections off the screen. Quite astounding. I previously had a TV that was quite reflective and distracting. The 62531's screen doesn't reflect anything* Minor screen-door effect where things shimmer. Only noticed a couple of times on backgrounds with subtle gradients, like ice in a hockey game, and the blue sea in Finding Nemo.* Skin-tone color isn't quite right - slightly reddish. I'm still making some adjustments to the color settings, so perhaps with a little more experimentation this will improve.

5Nice TV if you need a small HDTV set
By terpfan1980
I got this TV compliments of the big V telco/data company. The big V telco promised customers that signed up for their Fiber Optic to the home service triple play bundle a free Sharp Aquos TV. Apparently their offer was very popular and lots of customers like me signed up during their promotion.I note that this particular Sharp LCD TV doesn't make mention of the Aquos model/brand, tough it is a very nice HDTV set if you are in need of a smaller set. As a kitchen/dining room set, or perhaps as a TV for use in children's rooms this Sharp model (LC19SB25U) would seem to be a very nice choice. It delivers crisp and sharp (no pun intended) pictures with it's 720p capability. (1080i or 1080p would downconvert nicely on this set) In my case, this TV serves me well for watching TV a few feet over on the corner of the desk in my den/playroom type area. It offers me the opportunity to watch TV programming while using my regular HDTV to play video games on, on most nites serving up the nightly baseball game :-)The remote control is adequate, and the available connections are also quite adequate (including an HDMI port and PC input port, features not always included on smaller LCD TVs). Documentation included with this TV is complete and thorough without being too confusing or hard to use.In most cases a larger TV may be priced within range of this Sharp LCD TV, and you may find the larger size is more important than the input ports or other impressive features found on this Sharp LCD TV. Research the features you'd gain or lose along the way before buying just to be sure you aren't making a bad decision.

4Nice little TV
By A. McIntire
After reading the other reviews here, and checking this model (and others) out at brick & mortar stores, we decided to buy it despite the negative comments on the sound/volume. As others here have noted the picture is quite nice, but more important we did not have any problems with the volume. We have not yet turned it up over maybe 1/3 of the total, and it is plenty loud enough for our living room. Granted, we are not vacuuming while watching TV, but we do have a couple of rambunctious kids, and the TV is plenty loud enough with them running around.------------------------------(later)Well, some videos (disc & tape) seem to need the volume turned all the way up to hear, but most things are just fine at 1/4 to 1/3 volume level. Don't know what makes those videos different, but they consistently need the volume boost, while others never need it. Regular TV (over the air or via cable) never needs the boost.

5Very good HDTV
By D. Renfroe
This Sharp LCD HDTV Is great. Has a super clear picture... works flawlessly in 480P mode with my Nintendo Wii and Dvd. The built in digital tuner was able to pick up about 15 Digital HDTV Channels using a standard indoor rabbit ears antenna. I am also very impressed with the black level and contrast. Will also connect to a pc in in full 1360x768 resolution. This tv also has an optical out for connecting a dolby digital 5.1 tuner. It amazing to get True DD 5.1 surround sound from shows such as CSI Miami. The built in speakers are only 2 watt. So I recomend use of external speakers with this set. the resolution of 720P is perfect for this size HDTV. 480p sources such as dvds and wii across the component cables scale very well and look great. I would highly recomend this set to anyone looking for a high quality Small size HDTV set.

5Elegant design, Spectacular Picture
By Dave
I bought Sony's 60" SXRD after spending the last year researching big screen TVs. The picture quality is top notch- blacks on par with those of a CRT or plasma television and stunning visual clarity. The liquid crystal on Silicon (LCoS) technology combines the best qualities of DLP and LCD projection TV sets; the picture quality of Sony's SXRD LCoS impressed me more than JVC's D-ILA LCoS.There is no screen door effect on this TV and it displays motion well. The user interface is very user friendly and I was able to access the vast majority of the television's functions without referencing the user's manual. There are more open inputs than I need (8 total, including a few accessible from the front) and the Picture in Picture can be used from both multiple inputs (e.g. DVD and Cable) or from the same input (e.g. both frames from the cable box)Analog TV appears as good or better than other TVs this size and HD is incredible. With any TV this size, however, be aware that flaws in the picture quality of a broadcast signal will be more apparent. This hasn't been a problem with DVDs or HD channels. The 60" SXRD also looks more elegant than other sets in this range, nice given that a set this size will dominate any room it's in. It's also light weight enough to be moved easily by two people.I'm happy that I bought this model and strongly recommend it.

5Stunning picture quality!
By G.E.
I looked at half a dozen 1080p true HDTVs in October 2005 before settling on the KDS-R50XBR1 (the 50" little brother to this TV). I am thrilled with the picture quality, especially after fine-tuning the Brightness, Contrast, Picture, and RGB balance settings using the Avia calibration DVD. Especially on true HDTV 1920x1080 sources, this TV has an absolutely outstanding picture! In fact, it's more like watching a film or looking out a window than a mere television picture. The SXRD picture is liquid smooth and silky with no screen door effect or harsh "graininess" you see in competing technologies such as DLP, LCD, and even plasma. One important note: If you are debating between the 50" and 60" models, you should know that both models use the same 120 watt bulb. With the 60" model having approximately 20% more screen surface area to light up, that translates to approximately a 20% dimmer picture than the 50 inch model. (If you ask me, it's not a "bright" idea to use the same bulb wattage for two projection TVs of different sizes, but I guess it keeps manufacturing costs down.)Compare the two models side by side on the same HDTV content (I did) and you'll see a marked difference in the vividness of the whites and bright colors. The KDS-R50XBR1 50" really "pops" (like looking out the window on a sunny day); whereas the KDS-R60XBR1 60" looks merely average in the brightness department (the overall picture is still excellent, just a bit dimmer). For me, I decided that a smaller screen with a brighter picture was more important than a big screen with a slightly dimmer picture - especially since this TV sits in a daylight room. Hopefully Sony will correct this oversight in a future SXRD model because the 60" picture is considerably more impressive purely from a size perspective. The pros: Its magnificent picture quality! SXRD is probably the finest picture you can buy for under $12,000. It has advanced picture fine-tuning feature for prosumers. The 50" model has a dazzling bright display that outshines everything I've seen so far.The cons: The side speakers are relatively weak with no bass response (as one would expect from their diminutive size). They are not detachable, and add a considerable amount of horizontal width to this TV's footprint. They ought to be made detachable or placed beneath the screen instead at the sides. Also, there are only 2 HDMI ports. It is quite conceivable that a person might have 3-4 HDMI devices (Bluray DVD, Playstation 3, Dish Network, Digital Cable, etc.) but most TVs on the market only have 1-2 HDMI ports so this is not unusual. Daytime viewing is generally very good as long as no direct light hits the TV screen; however, projection TVs still don't seem as bright as the old cathode ray tube (CRT) TVs.

5Price has decreased 25% in 2 months since introduction and before Christmas/New Years/Superbowl season.
By Elegant_gentleman
I welcome the opportunity to share my perspective as an owner of a SONY SXRD KDS-R60XBR1. I notice that the Amazon.com price has decreased 25% since the item became widely available in October 2005. I obtained mine through a traditional brick and mortar retailer, but believe the associates of Amazon.com can perform just as well. The item performs an excellent job. Once I had the cable card installed by the cable company the performance was outstanding, the best I've ever seen. On standard digital (SD) transimissions such as a 4:3 NTSC 480i HBO thru the cable card, I was wondering why the "16:9 HD" picture was cropped. It was an optical illusion. The clean-up, etc. circuits were that perfect. There are a minimum of 22 adjusts possible on "Pro" view mode. There are many others that only a ISF certified calibration technician with professional equipment should use for greyscale. A few notes about the information on this Amazon.com webpage as of 06 December 2005 --- the mass/weight of the item is about 120 pounds, not 300 pounds. The brightness of the 60" unit is fine in my living room at mid-day with all the lights on and shades open. (My windows face west). Hands down I think it beats the JVC LCOS, any wobulator DLP, and in most situations "all" front projectors (which require ideal conditions). As of December 2005 I have not seen a Hitachi LCOS or LG LCOS, but do not expect them (a first generation product) to be on par with this second generation Sony. (Sony Quallia was first generation). I have heard second hand from folks that have visited the trade show in Las Vegas that the Toshiba/Canon SED will not be price competitive. (Their opinions vary with regrd to performance results of the pre-production SED). If you have not seen a Sony SXRD LCOS 1080P display being feed with a dedicated source, you owe it to yourself. NOTE: Some retailers have Mitsi wobulator DLPs feed one on one by hard drives with true 1080P source. That is a huge advantage compared to a splitter of over-the=-air HDTV signal. But it is not realistic for the average consumer. Before you buy any TV display based on your subject viewing, watch it for 15 minutes and find out the quality of the source feed and how many times it is split upstream of your desired representative product. Bottom line is it looks like JVC low-balled the prices on their LCOS and retailers are cutting (the substantial) margin on the Sony LCOS SXRD to match. Sony is adding a 1000 humans and who knows how many robots in their factory in Pittsburgh, PA, USA to crank these babbies out. If you are a babby boomer, you know the meaning of the Wall Street Journal article of April 2005 that revealed that Sony's business mocel is to re-establish their dominance of the (HD)TV market with the SXRD in the years 2006, 2007 much like the Sony Trinitron made their reputation in the late 1960's. Thank you Sony. I'll report back after my unit is ISF calibrated.

5Good device for good price
By Heero
I just received this television. My first impression is great. I've been investigating diffrent brands and different models of LCD TV's for a while. Here is the conclusion I reached and the reasons for purchasing this TV:* Sony has great models for over $2500. They have great picture but not great enough to compensate for the couple of thousand extra dollars paid. I saw 46XBR6 and 46V5100 next to each other in BB and did not see a significant difference except the price.* Samsungs have great LCD TVs. But glossy screen would not work for me at all. I have a bright living room where my TV is located. So, if you will have your TV in a bright room, you probably would like to avoid glossy screens like Samsung has. It really reflects a lot almost like a mirror. This was a big deal for me.Now, my experice with KDL46V5100 is as follows:It has great picture quality. I did not expect it to be so good at even SD. It is very easy to use. We plugged the TV and started to use it right away. Even user's manual is just a few pages. Before buying the TV I paid extra attention to the wide angle performance. This TV has about the same view from front and from sides: no changes in color or image quality with angle that I recognized.I am extremely satisfied with the Amazon delivery. They brought the TV, unpacked it and installed the TV on the stand.Good TV for good price and good service from Amazon...

5GREAT TV
By John Difebbo
I recently purchased the Sony Bravia 46V5100, and wow is all i can say. This is my first HD anything purchase, although i did a ton of research for over a year, im glad i chose this Sony. I also promptly purchased the playstation 3 for the games and blu-ray, along with the HD package from the cable company, and it blows me away. The picture never blurs or anything like that, im a huge NASCAR fan and there is no blurring, no skipping and you never miss a bit of the action, and of course its the fastest sport on TV. With all the HDMI inputs, i dont know what else i can put in there to make it better, theres more than enough room for all the accessories. The screen is what made the difference for me between this Sony and the Samsung of the equivilant. The screen is not as glossy as the samsung, although the bezel is as shiny as the rest, you hardly notice it. The white glove delivery was great, i was notified of every step of the journey for my TV, the delivery guys unloaded it, ops checked it and explained some of the features. The only problem was a "feature" that came with the TV that darkens the screen during dark scenes on a movie or TV show, this problem has been fixed by a software update, found on the Sony support web site. its a very easy fix, just requiring an USB memory stick, or if you dont have one the Sony people will send you one. The update just takes minutes and makes a world of difference. I was a bit nervous about buying a TV online, but i went and checked it out at best buy, and it was about $400 less at amazon than at best buy, so my decision was made for me. Over all its a great tv, and a great price for the size of the TV. Thanks

3Backlighting issues
By GreenArrow
Overall, the picture quality is good, as only Sony TV's seem to deliver and the audio sounds great even though the speakers are small. However, the manufacture quality is not up to my expectations when it comes to spending extra money for the Sony brand. This is my 2nd 46v5100 as the first one was problematic and updating the firmware didn't help. There was intermittent loss of audio, there was terrible flashlighting in 3 of the corners, especially in the upper left corner, there was clouding in the bottom half of screen, and finally there appeared to a dimple behind the LCD. Amazon's policy on defective TV's requires that the buyer contact Sony to get a case #. Well, discussing to troubleshoot the problem with Sony was a real pain. (The Sony rep believed that resetting the TV could fix the clouding and flashlighting!) The replacement TV has manufacture date of August 2009 so it had the latest firmware. Fortunately, the 2nd set didn't have the audio problem and had considerably less clouding, however it still has flashlighting in the upper left corner. I'll probably just keep this set as Amazon's return/exchange policy for LCD TV's is a hassle. (Or at least, I was hassled by two Amazon reps). Now, I'm looking to get a second LCD TV for bedroom but I'm looking at other brands. I gave this TV only 3 stars because it seems average even though it is a Sony... It's tough to enjoy this TV's feature set when there are backlighting issues that is so visible every time I watch TV.
