Great quality television

I don't have a lot of high definition (HD) content available to me, but this TV does great with standard definition TV and DVDs. The black levels are darker on this generation than previous year Samsungs. I personally don't like the look of Plasma TVs, and LCDs are still a little expensive for the largest models, so right now, DLP is the best type of TV technology for larger sizes at a reasonable price.Be sure you use the best possible connection from your video sources to this TV for the best possible picture. Hopefully you have at least S-Video (out) on your satellite or cable box and component (out) on your DVD player. Get some good cables (gold connectors), but you don't need the very high cost premium cables.I also looked at the 50" and 56" versions of this TV, but this size is the best for my room based on viewing distance. IMO, you should choose the size of your TV based on the viewing distance. A rough formula is to divide your viewing distance (in inches) by 2 and also divide your viewing distance by 3. Your TV diagonal size should fall between those sizes. In my case, our viewing distance is at about 12 feet (144 inches) => 144/2 = 72 inches, and 144/3 = 48 inches. Then pick a TV with a diagonal between those numbers.The lower end of the range will be more like your standard TV viewing and the upper end will be more like a movie theater, "immersive" experience. Choose what's best for you.EDITUpdate as of October 2006: We still love this TV. There are other reviews here that indicate bulb problems. If your bulb does go out, it is a user repairable item, no need for a tech to look at it. Just order from samsung's replacement part site. Bulbs should last for about 5,000 hours. That's the only downside to this TV, the bulb replacement cost.

I am now a vegetable...

This TV is a great value! I have it hooked up to a Media Center PC and have had a permanent smile ever since. I found that this television was brighter and clearer than any other DLP TV. I am not sure if it is typical, but I ordered this TV through Amazon and the delivery crew brought it into my house and hooked it up to make sure it worked. I would recommend this TV to anybody.Also, the only problem I had hooking it up to a PC was that it MUST use a VGA cable (HDMI-DVI does not work on this TV from a PC.)

Love It So Far

I got this TV two days ago, delivered and set up by Eagle Freight. Very happy with the order/delivery experience. Although I would suggest you take the initiative and call Eagle freight as soon as your tv makes it to its destination. Mine arrived last Friday, but wasn't "scheduled" to be delivered until the next friday. I called them, explained that the TV had arrived and if I could schedule delivery sooner, which they happily complied with. Two guys arrived right on time and brought the TV in, let me fiddle with it all I wanted before I signed the form (I was worried because the box had been severely damaged, and the internal styrofoam was munched, here's to hoping that nothing later will develop, but the TV was apparently unharmed) (aside: WHY does samsung use such cheap packing techniques for these TVs they know will be individually sent to customers via freight??)So they unpack it and take the box and trash away, and there I sit with my new toy. I fire up ESPN HD and am a little disappointed with the picture quality, but reserve final judgment until I work out the kinks. Right off the batt, I realize I had the picture zoomed from my cable box, and was outputting 1080i instead of 720p. Once I fixed that things were instantly better. Then I adjusted the factory picture settind and got the picture looking great. Monday night football looked absolutely supurb! I had originally ordered the 6187 (1080p model) but it was backordered, so I cancelled and went with the 6186, for six-fifty less! I figured that because my main facination with HDTV is for sports, and that ESPN and other broadcast in 720p (I think NBC is 1080i), that this is the best sports can look, as I can't see the networks ponying up to switch all of their new expensive equipment to sitch to 1080p anytime soon.So what do standard definition broadcasts look like? Well.... its garbage in, garbage out here folks. Some look "OK," others look terrible. And then there are some that look absolutely wonderful (like HBO, for example). Yes I wish some of the standard def stuff looked a little better, but it doesn't really bother me that much, as the shows I watch are mostly prime timw network stuff that's in HD or sports...So all in all I'm happy with the TV, but very nervous that no problems develop, because Amazon won't be there to help at all, and I've heard nothing but horror stories from people dealing with Samsung customer service. But I guess that is what you get for a much better price.Oh and by the way, don't get ripped off when buying HDMI cables, you don't need the $100 monster cable. Check the AVS Forums and the like, it just isn't necessary. There are sites that have great quality cable for MUCH cheaper (m o n o p r i c e . c o m) is one of them, that's where I got mine, and it works great.

Excellent Plasma, but very pricey

This is my first plasma HDTV purchase. The picture quality is fantastic. This is a NeoPDP panel (single pane of glass)The panel thinness is still amazing to me. A screen this big and this thin looks crazy.The sound is surprisingly good... the included speakers are also extremely thin. Not huge bass, but still very good for TV speakers.The wireless feature is nice... especially for those who want a wall mount installation. You still have the option to use an HDMI cable from the separate tuner to the panel, if you like. I am using wireless, but on a stand. The stand has glass shelves. I have the tuner component on a lower shelf. Line of sight between transmitter and receiver, for the wireless, seems critical. This may be since I have the receiver almost directly over the transmitter.The Viera Cast is nice, except I haven't been able to get the Amazon-On-Demand to play anything. It logs in and I can access content... nothing plays. I have contacted both Panasonic and Amazon... twice and have not received a comment from either. You Tube, Picassa, Weather Channel and Bloomberg all work well. Viera Cast could be a very nice feature if they can add more content... Vudu, Hulu, Netflix, etc. would be nice.The THX picture setting option has a yellowish hue... this seems to be inherent in the THX settings that Panasonic is using.ProsPicture qualityTHIN screenConsPrice (although I did get this well below MSRP)Amazon-On-Demand doesn't play (has been corrected by firmware update see below)2/4/10I contacted Panasonic about the inability to stream Amazon VOD content. They were able to replicate the same problem on a TC-P54Z1 at their facility. Panasonic kept me posted via e-mail about their progress with this issue. A few days later, Panasonic tech support issued a firmware update that corrected the problem. Amazon VOD content now streams through Viera Cast. Very good customer support!

Z1 Plasma

Wow! How did I get here! I can't believe I own a Z1. I was looking to buy either a Plasma or LED TV in the 46-50" range. Originally was looking at the Panasonic V10's and the Samsung c8000 LED's. I liked the performance of the Plasma & the looks of the LEDs. I was NOT looking for 3D TV's, but that's what corporate is pushing in their higher end units-I was quite frustrated by their market research and product direction (fad). The Z1 was in the upper stratosphere of price and quality, royalty really; I knew about it, but had no hopes of ever joining its inner circle. There was no way I was paying $5K for any TV. So I bought it (more later on this).This is an amazing TV. It combines the performance of Plasma with the aesthetics of an LED. It's just about 1" thin. It is only available in 54". The side mounted speakers add about 2.5" per side to the unit. Set-up time is just about 1 hour. Back-end connections are straight forward. The "controller" is not integrated to the TV (that's part of why it can be only 1" thin), so there is a separate "tuner" box that connects to HT and to the TV and to the remote receiver (it is a wireless remote, not IR-so you don't even have to point it to the TV, but you do need to register it to the TV). I have only hooked up through fios (1080i) so I have not tested the tuner's HD over the air function. The unit exhibits no sunlight glare or vieweing angle issues.Viera CAST (IPTV)is pretty cool - got to see my Picassa slide shows, Stream HD movie from Amazon VOD, YouTube videos, Bloomberg, etc. - easy set-up and navigation - the unit even updated to latest firmware version- I wish I could add my own app's and content I like, both public and private. Also, this concept (IPTV) is not quite there yet by these manufacturers. Some of the data entry is cumbersome on the TV remote-better concept would be to have a registration site where I could manage content and accounts online as well. SD slide shows ran smoothly from the SD card directly from my Canon PS, but not from my Nikon DSLR (5MB ea photo). SD detection was automatic. HD movies are....phenomenal...on this unit, be it camcorder, DVR or BlueRay. Sound output is fantastic on a 7.2 AVR home theater set-up. I haven't spent too much time (yet) on THX and I haven't yet played PCHD TV fed from PC through the TV.This is a phenomenal TV. It is last year's model and I am ok with that. It lists for $5K. IMO, it is not worth the list price. For $1700 you can get this unit on Amazon now. At that price it is worth every penny. The TV has much better performance than the new 3D TV's out there today in that price range and above. You'd be hard pressed to find a better TV at this price. It is a beautiful unit.This is a phenomenal TV. It is last years model and i am ok with that. It lists for $5K. IMO, it is not worth the list price. For $1700 you can get this unit on Amazon today. at that price it is worth every bit and more. much better performance than the new 3D tv's out there now in this price range.

Great TV

Well worth the new low price. I have had this TV for 6 months now. It has an amazing amount of great features and the picture quality is amazing. Nothing bad to say. I don't get the people who are complaining about the detachable speakers, they are the best sounding 1' deep speakers you will find, and you cannot compare them to an aftermarket sound system, it's just sense. Panasonic made them 1' deep so they would not affect the slim profile of the rest of the TV.

GREAT VALUE

I have this model with the dvd included (DX-LDVD19-10A) which makes it a little thicker but still slim. I was told at Best Buy that the Dynex brand is their in-house brand, which gave me pause, but so far so good.This television is for a guest room and I was not prepared to spend the money for a 1080i set that would be not be used often. Space was another issue that needed to be addressed and having this tv/dvd combo saved space, messy wires and an outlet.This set is 720p with a 60 Hz refresh rate. There was no noticeable motion blurring when watching an action movie on the set. There is a "S video" connection as well as a HDMI. It even allows you to connect it to a pc to be used as a monitor. There was no USB port but for the price of under $150, I really cannot complain.My only complaint is the washed out colors and that print is not as crisp as I would like (or used to on our Samsung 1080). I will continue to tinker with the color settings to see if this can be improved. Although this tv cannot compare to a Samsung or Sony, it looks better then the LG set that was twice the price.I would recommend this set for kids, kitchens, guest rooms or those on a tight budget. This HDTV television is a bargain!

epic fail

this tv is on its way back to seller. picture quality is much less than one expects from a new lcd and something about the actual dimensions of the tv, as opposed to the "19" class" deignation don't permit a normal picture display in any of its zoom settings. regular display is either surrounded by 1-2"black borders squeezed to the dimensions of a 14" tv, or expanded to lop off the top and bottom half inch. and this is with myriad zoom possibilities provided by both its programming and the cable remote. i am SO annoyed.

Good value TV - still running well!

I bought this TV from Best Buy roughly 3 years ago and it's still running fairly well.Originally, it was used for cable TV, but I also use it as a monitor.A few thoughts:- It's a good value TV, but remember that it's 720p. It's relatively inexpensive.- The menu is well designed. Easy to use and navigate through. It's also easy to use without the remote too.- The picture quality is decent, but it's fairly good for movies, tv shows, and computer use. When I play games on my PC with this TV, the picture quality is smooth. The only part for me that is a concern is sports. Again, it's decent, but certainly not top-notch for a 720p TV.- I like that the idle red light is not intrusive and stays relatively low key.Overall, a good budget 19 inch TV. It's good for all purpose use and for computer use as well. This TV has endured frequent use in the past 3 years and still is running well. Good buy.

nice but a few minor complaints

Very nice picture, not quite as bright as plasmas but watch mostly at night anyway, also viewing angle needs work compared to plasmas, you can see the difference at most big box stores, just look down the isle at an angle and you'll see the plasmas really have a better angle. But overall for a 61in TV very nice, The TV Guide function is cool now if Time warner would just give me a cable card I'd be setJust found out about a minor glitch, this TV is not quite ready for primetime HDMI, the HDMI input does NOT support pure digital audio (only PCM) the end result if you have a new dvd player that has HDMI out going into TV then out to AV receiver via optical out, only PCM (standard Dolby) will be output not Digital Dolby. Now I know lots of people just run the audio direct from the dvd to AV Reciever anyway but this defeats my purpose of trying out the Samsung DVD950 so I can simplify life and use the Anynet function to switch to a DVD. Bottom line the ANynet function leaves much to be desired and they probably should of just given you a programable remote with macros instead. So if you have this tv don't waste money on a fancy DVD player with HDMI outputs, you can't tell the difference between component anyway :)

Beautiful picture...great price.

We just got this TV delivered on Feb. 4, and we are in love with the picture. Previous raters have said its "not as bright" as others in the same category; on the contrary, I find the picture quite bright. Also, I don't know what the one guy meant with the warranty not being good when purchased from Amazon. I registered my TV with Samsung and there was no trouble.The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars has to do with Amazon's "white glove" delivery, rather than the TV itself. For $199, you're supposed to get "knowledgeable" delivery professionals to unpack it, hook it up, and set it up. Amazon tells you that you have to "sign off" on the delivery saying it is in perfect condition and then you cannot return it. The guys knew *nothing* about how to set it up (other than the electrical plug), so you pretty much have to decide whether or not it's perfect without seeing the picture. This is a pretty involved hook-up when you're connecting an HD cable box (with the three video cables) and the directions do not have examples of all scenarios. The delivery men were rather rude about my wanting to see the picture before signing off on the product.In short, the time for delivery was great, it appears to have arrived in great condition, but for $199, I expected to have delivery men who knew how to hook it up. Since then, I noticed that the link for more information on the delivery service is no longer working. You might want to download the manual and get an idea for the set-up before it is delivered, because you won't get help with the "white glove" service.

Good tv, works well, minor engineering flaws.

Pros: Large, clear picture. Watching the tv show "Lost", the picture is absolutely stellar. Vivid, crisp images. There have been other HD programs that are not as impressive. I'm assuming they were in 480p vs 720p, but that's an assumption for the difference in picture clarity in HD programming. Xbox gaming has worked flawlessly, with no lag. There have been no problems with color wheel buzzing (as was reported on the hlp series), and I'm not a person who sees rainbows, thus, I haven't seen them on this tv either. The tv guide onscreen has been incredibly easy to use. It was functioning correctly the 2nd day.CONS: The engineering for particular screens is awkward. To use the PIP, you can hit 1 button on the remote to bring up a pre-programmed channel, but all you can do is turn it on or off. To surf, or change the pip channel, you must go through the menu and go through several screens, and then you can only select an analog channel. Also, the remote that comes with the tv does not allow you to surf a day at a time on the tv guide onscreen. I can only go hour by hour. You can use the search feature which works well, but I feel I should be able to hit a button or select a time to search for programming and I need another remote to do it. (The remote that would include cd/dvd controls for fast forward).SUMMARY: Those are my only 2 complaints and since they are engineering issues I have to recommend the tv. I'm happy with it and will keep it for years if it keeps working as well as it is. I've had the tv for about 2 weeks.
