5Will never buy a Samsung again LG Plasma is the best.....
By Rob D'Aquin
Bought this TV at Sam's Club a year ago, and it has performed flawlessly! Picture looks better than any dlp, lcd, or led that Ive seen! Also no stupid lamps that burn out within a year. I replaced 2 in my Samsung within 2 years, never sgain. TV stays on half the day and no degradation in quality at all! Also blu ray, ps3, and Xbox all look great on it! If you can find this TV, buy it, you won't be sorry.

16th Avenue Electronics is TERRIBLE
By T. Howe
We purchased this TV nearly two months ago. We received a broken TV, severely broken. 6th Avenue customer service is pure BS. We've been getting run around to Amazon, 6th ave, and their random shipper for over a month now with no resolution in sight. No one, (even Amazon whom I thought could do no wrong), seems to care at all.LG makes great products, and I'm sure this unit works fabulously when it arrives in working condition.DO NOT PURCHASE FROM 6th AVE ELECTRONICS!!! Buy from Amazon directly, or go somewhere else.

4Very Good Picture
By Stan
This TV has a great picture, and 50" is plenty big for my living room. My only reservation is that it is an energy hog and gets very hot, which increases the load on the air conditioner in our hot Texas summers. It does have various energy saving settings, which dim the picture a bit, but produce less heat and use less electricity, and I use the energy saving settings in the summer.

1Disappointing
By steve
Bought the TV, had new digital HDTV cable installed, spent half a day re-wiring and moving all my other components, plugged the TV in, and was so disappointed I almost kicked it. The picture is totaly fuzzy and the colors are dull. I messed with the settings called Viewsonic support, no help, the picture just remains lousy.I tried a DVD with my progressive scan DVD player and the picture was misarable. For sure the unit won't work as a computer monitor.Don't waste your money or time on this one.

4Pretty Darn Good For Under 3K!
By James
O.K.----I think our man Steve from CA. might have been better served if he had read the owner's manual first, and then had professional installation. THIS IS NOT A HDTV! It will take the signal, but will have to "dumb it down" to display. But that display is absolutely gorgeous: sharp colors, wide viewing angle and NO artifacts. As for using the display as a computer monitor, I would be hard pressed to recommend it any higher. As with all viewsonic monitors I have owned in the past, apps from word processing to the newest games are just perfect. I connected my cable to a media center computer I built, and now use a nifty program called Snapstream that puts the old TIVO to shame! Now my wife can tape her soaps, easily burn her favorites to DVD, check her E-Mail, surf the web, video chat with her mom, play Tetris (O.K.---she's a little behind the times in her gaming!), find that song she has been looking for, etc----all from the comfort of our bed. She's now happy as a clam, which any guy will tell you pays the ol' hubby dividends far greater than the sub 3K cost of the unit. And I must admit, I can't wait for Halflife II on a big monitor with the display settings jacked to the max! Two caveats: Again, no HDTV. Perhaps more importantly, if you are going to set this unit up yourself, you ought be an enthusiast. Trying the many input choices enabled me to decide on the best option for myself, which proved to be the DVI for the computer, and the S-Video for all TV functionality except for DVD playback, which benefits with progressive scan connections (you know, that red blue yellow thingy). If you rely on the manual alone, you are apt to be left confused, as it is far too brief and poorly written. If you feel, as I do, that the PC is the future engine to drive home entertainment, this unit is an excellent partner!

3Not bad for an EDTV, but it's not HDTV.
By Kathy Taylor
First of all, this TV is an EDTV 'monitor', not an HDTV as they want you to think. I received mine today, and the actual spec is buried on p.16 of the manual. This TV is only capable of displaying 480p max, and can receive HDTV signals that are passed through an external decoder (the decoder is not built in). However those 780p/1080i HDTV signals are downconverted to 480p. Same with Progressive-scan DVDs. I wish I would have known this before ordering. Now, the picture looks nice, but $3k is a lot to spend on a widescreen TV, even though it's a flat-panel.

5Outstanding Plasma TV!!
By Richard
This is a preliminary review of my 42PX77U. I ordered this TV on Amamzon thru Vanns.com, and was very pleased with the entire transaction. It arrived on 7/30 so I've only had a few days to form this opinion, but I doubt it will go down.I did a lot of research on HDTVs and the majority of what I read pointed me towards plasmas and Panasonic (quality/price ratio). Cnet.com was a great tool along with other customer reviews from different sites, including amazon. The picture, to me, seems much more realistic than LCD. Once you adjust the picture settings off Vivid and create a more realistic view, you begin to be amazed at the clarity and realism. Some of the nice benefits to this model are the anti-reflective coating on the screen. I cannot control 100% of the light in my living room during the day and knew this feature would come in handy, and it has. It's $100 more from the base model, but it's worth it. The image is just as clear as the non-treated screen (42PX75U). The side speakers are great and produce clear audio. I also believe they help produce a wider range of sound coming from the TV. I do not have surround sound set up yet, but am quite pleased with the TV's audio. Having picture setting memory for each video input is great. I can have my HD cable, DVD and Wii set to three different settings that help compliment each experience. Many folks comment on the poor standard definition viewing on their HDTVs, and I've witnessed it myself on some DLPs. But this TV can produce a nice, clear picture on non-HD channels. (A BIG plus given there are far more non-HD channels)My TV is setup using the provided stand, which was fairly easy to assemble. Total assembly time, 5 minutes.Lastly, I've been concerned with possible "burn-in" so I've scaled down the picture settings and only watch TV in "Just" mode to fill the entire screen. Panasonic recommends doing this for at least the first 100 hours during the TV's break-in period. Honestly, even with the picture setting scaled down, the HD picture still looks great. I guess everything is relative.Bottom line, you cannot go wrong with this TV. You'll have a hard time finding a better TV at this price ($1350). If you buy online, do your research and make sure your vendor is reputable and a valid reseller of the brand you're planning to purchase. Local retailers will come close to the online price, but have a hard time keeping the TV in stock. That's why I purchased mine online...quicker turnaround. Good luck!

5Awesome! Awesome! Awesome!
By A. Davis
I'm sitting in front of my new Panasonic plasma TV, and I'm not sure I'll ever move off of this couch. I'm so pleased with the picture quality, and I'm very pleasantly surprised at how good the sound is. This purchase was a long time coming, as I had been researching flat-screen TVs for about year. I finally got serious a couple of months ago and got to work deciding which one was right for me. I have a small den, so a 42" screen was as big as I dared go. (I sit about 8.5 feet from TV.) I considered both LCDs and plasmas. I decided on plasma for two reasons. First because I'd read that if you go 42" or larger, plasma is generally better. Second, I felt the images on the LCDs were a bit exaggerated -- the colors pop *too* much. I think the plasma image looks more realistic. Once I decided on plasma, it was a choice between Panasonic and Samsung. Panasonic is a bit more expensive, but I felt the Panasonic reputation was worth it. I'm not concerned about not having 1080 because no one will be broadcasting in 1080 for a long time (and I'm not sure I could discern the difference anyway) and I don't have any intention of buying an HD DVD player. As I said, the picture is amazing. The HD channels come through brilliantly, and the SD picture is also very good. No complaints there. I assumed I would want to add some external speakers for this TV, but the sound turns out to be quite good. It's not the same quality that you'd get on a big stereo system, but it's much better than I would have expected, and there is no distortion at high volumes. (Granted, I don't crank it up *too* much.) Setup was very easy. I plugged it into the cable box, and we were ready to go. I'll add that I'm very pleased with the Eagle/CEVA delivery service. They delivered a few days earlier than originally promised. They were very courteous and careful with the set. They don't do setup -- just take the TV out of the box and set it down on the floor for you. Everything about this experience has been good. Amazon.com offered a highly competitive price that included free shipping, so I couldn't be more pleased.

5Great - but shop around
By joetagaz
I bought this set through Costco (it was cheaper so look around). I actually have the TH-42PC77U which is the same set but with an anti-glare screen. Depending on where you're putting it you might want to spend the extra $100.I was a little concerned that this was a 720p set given all the hype about 1080p. I have 1080p 52" Sharp LCD in the family room and was going to go with another, but smaller for the master bedroom. However, after reading Consumer Reports review of this set I thought I'd give it a try (it was certainly cheaper).Set up was a breeze. You have to mount the stand, hook up your cable box, etc. and you're done. It's that simple. It's not fancy. My Sharp has enough settings to make a rocket scientist happy. This is more of the variety - turn it on and it works. That's fine with me!Now, the picture. The SD channels look better on this set than they do on my 1080p LCD. Why? Well, it doesn't have to upconvert the 480 to 1080, only to 720 so it's not as grainy. Think of it this way, if you have a picture on your pc and you enlarge it, the image gets grainier right? Pretty much the same thing on your HDTV.OK, the HD picture - we're talking 720p versus 1080p here right? I can't see the difference between the two sets. My wife thinks I'm crazy because I was running between the two rooms to compare the image but nada, zero, zilch. Looks great. The blacks are terrific, no cloudy images, no blur on action. The only thing I messed up was not ordering a bracket at the same time. It's on its way so I'll have this hanging on the wall in no time. You won't go wrong with this set! You can get a pretty good price as well, I believe they're on closeout but don't let that hold you back. Just shop around for the price.

5GREAT TV FOR THE MONEY!
By Sean T. Johnston
I had been researching HDTVs for the past 6 months before finally, settling on this model. I decided to go with the Plasma over the LCD mainly, because plasma offers much better PQ and motion for the money and I didn't want to sacrifice size. The new Pioneers are very nice but way too expensive if you ask me. So it came down to the Samsung 5084 or one of the Panasonic 1080p models. For a long time the specs of the Samsung had me leaning that way. However, after seeing one in person I was not that impressed, it looked cheap. Panasonic also has a much better track record for reliability when it comes to Plasmas (they are rated for 100,000 hours vs. 50,000 - 60,000 hours of other manufactures). No knock on Samsung they make great LCDs check out there 71 or 81 series. The 3 current Panasonic models are the PZ77U, PZ700U, PZ750U. The 3 models can all be purchased within about $250 of each other (MSRP range from $2800 to $3500). The 77U and 700U are almost identical with the exception that the PZ77U has an anti-glare screen and the PZ700U has a slightly upgraded speakers package (who buys a 50" plasma for speakers anyway?). The 750U adds to the 700U a third HDMI input and more picture settings (I was going to go with this model but the HDMI input is right in the middle front of the TV?). Panasonic has a very highly rated anti-glare screen, not to be confused with anti-glare coating found on the 700U and 750U; they are not the same thing. I went with this model because the anti-glare screen actually increases the contrast. So far I have had it for 3 months and been extremely happy with my purchase from 6ave.

4For $2000, you can't go wrong

This was on sale at Circuit City for $2k. I almost thought something was wrong, but that was indeed the sale. I picked it up and almost immediately was disappointed by the lack of pop in colors compared to my LCD 4665.Turns out that I was just watching a bad source, in daylight. Once the night came, and HD channels were on...things got better - a lot better. I went to the store again to compare the picture on this to the 700 which has a glossy screen, and I honestly couldn't not tell a difference when looking at them from dead on. One looks like it has glass, and that's about it.The whites are not pure white on this, or hardly any other plasma. But the darks are yummy and perfect. SD stinks, but HD sources really shine. If you can get a good deal on this - you can't go wrong!I would like to see more control over the tweeking features, but the picture looks great, so I'm not complaining too much.I definitely prefer this to my old LCD...the motion on it is smoother - no blur when the camera pans. The darks are REALLY dark and uniform. At 50" it's a movie experience!

5Just an awesome TV-even without HD sources

After a lengthy research period, I finally settled on the 50" PZ77U. I'm happy to report that after two weeks of use the experience has been fantastic. First off, the picture is just gorgeous. Of course I expected that with HD cable and a Blu-Ray (PS3) player -- it's jaw-droppingly great -- but I was very impressed with the SD picture of this unit. Sure, it pales in comparison to HD, but the SD channels don't have that processed look that makes everything appear like it's been through a photoshop watercolor filter. I've seen that on a number of LCDs and plasmas before and it drives me nuts. Remember, they never will show a SD signal to you at most stores-- it's always a sharp HD signal. The good SD clarity is even more impressive for a 50" model.I'm still in the break-in period-- trying to make sure the phosphors burn in easily; I downloaded a burn-in disc from eaprogramming.com, which has been helpful.Lastly, a few nice words for the purchase experience via Amazon and 6ave: The unit was shipped to my home in Michigan within a week; upon delivery the unit was inspected as required; everything was great. I'd certainly use 6ave again.
