4Good Product.
By Michael Cowans
I purchased the Mitsubishi brand TV after carefully doing some research on DLP type TV's. I was impressed from the start. I purchased a 62inch set in mid 2005 and had no problems for 2 years. When I did have a problem it was the lamp ($210.00) Shortly after that the Ballast went. $300 for part and $280 Labor.I can only say that make sure you purchase the extended warranty.I still like their TV's and would purchase another one.

3Lessons Learned
By Scotty D
Owning this, my first high-def TV, has taught me a lot,Pros:-Very good picture (although not the, "Wow!" you get when viewing others)-Two HDMI inputsCons:-No 1080p-Only 60 Hz-No DLP-No digital audio in-No dedicated DVI to connect a computer-Built-in tuner is extremely slow, essentially unusable-Built-in speakers are terrible, definitely going to need an external amp and stereo or surround sound speakers-The ballast went out after 18 months. $300 part $300 labor. The repair man stated that bad ballasts are a common problem with this product line. Thus, buy the extended warranty if you purchase this or the 2006/2007 version.

Product Description

Treat yourself to an immersive experience with the latest ultra thin LED TV from Philips. With a powerful picture performance from Pixel Precise HD, the slim frame ensures you are always part of the action.

LED
The LED Display renders the highest available contrast with stunning brilliance, colors and low power consumption. The revolutionary new LED lights are positioned at both sides in the backlight for the LCD display. They generate brilliant light in bright image scenes, and are dimmed to lowest levels in dark scenes. The result is a stunning picture with extreme contrast, sharpness, vibrant color and with less energy compared to a normal LCD TV of the same screen size.

Full HD LCD display 1920x1080p
The Full HD screen has the widescreen resolution of 1920 x 1080p. This is the highest resolution of HD sources for the best possible picture quality. It is fully future proof as it supports 1080p signals from all sources, including the most recent like Blu-ray and advanced HD game consoles. The signal processing is extensively upgraded to support this much higher signal quality and resolution. It produces brilliant flicker-free progressive scan pictures with superb brightness and colors.

120Hz Clear LCD (2ms)
120Hz Clear LCD creates extreme motion sharpness for clear and vibrant images even with fast on-screen motion. The Double Frame Rate Insertion works with a high 120Hz refresh rate. It increases the sharpness of motion reproduction to more than twice that of conventional LCD, resulting in a response time of 2 milliseconds (measured in Perceived Blur-Edge-Width; BEW). This unique Philips technology brings motion sharpness of LCD displays to an unprecedented level.

Perfect Pixel HD Engine
Experience unrivalled sharpness and clarity with Perfect Pixel HD Engine. Each pixel of the picture is enhanced to better match the surrounding pixels, resulting in a more natural picture. The result is a uniq

4Surprisingly Great.
By matchless
I bought this TV recently from a national chain store on a semi-whim (I'd been wanting a new TV for a little while but wasn't sure if this was the time to buy). Surprised by how few reviews there were, I decided to write this one. While shopping with my wife, we wandered over to the TV wall just to check out what was available, and I proceeded to wander up and down the wall looking at the TVs. Slowly I narrowed my pool by size (37"-42"), technology (LED LCD), resolution (1080p), and refresh rate (120Hz-240Hz). After all that, I shocking found myself staring at a Philips set (at a great price). The picture was clear, colors were vibrant (probably over-saturated for the sales floor but that's par for the course, I believe), and the bezel was clean and understated. Honestly, I couldn't believe it. I asked my wife which one she liked, and she picked the same one! We decided to purchase this TV and have loved it ever since I set it up.The performance:price ratio on this TV is unbelievable. I'm the type of person who lives by the "get what you pay for" mantra, and, honestly, the price was the only thing that scared me about this TV. Is the deal too good to be true? Since we bought the TV without researching it first (another past time of mine), I hopped on teh almighty interwebz as soon as we got home. I could only find a couple negative comments, and I will elaborate on them here:- The remote and TV IR sensor are a little picky. An angry customer commented that you have to point the remote directly at the TV for it to work. This is not entirely true. The sensor is placed in the bottom middle of the bezel while most TVs have them out to the sides these days. He probably had something sitting directly in front of the TV blocking the sensor. I had to move our center channel speaker to the side a little so the remote has a clear path to the senor. Seems to be an average remote experience to me - just something to be aware of.- Video games lag with the 120Hz processing turned on. I only tried it with the setting at Minimum on my Xbox 360, but the video does noticeably lag (not a lot, but you can see it) at that setting. Solution: Turn it off. It's as simple as that.- For the short time I had the 120Hz processing turned on, I couldn't decide whether I liked it or not. It seems really cool, but my wife did not like it at all. There seems to be a little judder (like they skip, I guess that's the term) in fast moving objects with the setting on Minimum. We just turned it off and have left it that way. Honestly, after reading about the technology more, I'm not sure the programming for this feature is there yet. I'm a little bit of a purist so I'll just leave the video the way it is recorded and broadcast.- I've read some complaints about the sound. Well, what do you expect when the speakers are mounted on the back of the TV? I haven't auditioned the built-in sound setup since I have everything running through my home theater system, but I can't imagine the sound would be very good reverberating off of the wall behind it or the entertainment center surrounding it.Overall, I'm very pleased with this TV (especially since I was able to get it for roughly half of the competitors' price!). Philips may be able to offer this TV at a lower price because they don't do as much sponsoring, advertising, or PR as other brands like Samsung, LG, and Panasonic. This TV sat next to Samsung on the wall, and it outshined the Samsung. The menu experience is very sleek and quick. Not sure if this menu is proprietary to Philips or not, but it's certainly not one of the generic specials I see on all the store/off-brand TVs. The TV menu even has an option to add devices to it by linking a description+icon (video game, DVD, Cable/Satellite, etc.) to an input. My wife LOVES this feature even though we won't use it (AV receiver does all the switching). I even used a USB key to update the firmware on the TV. It was easy and executed flawlessly. Blu ray looks great on this TV, as well. The colors and details really pop. I'm hoping this TV will last my wife and I quite a while :)UPDATE (12/01/11): I've been meaning to update this review with one thing that I've noticed since we bought the TV. We still love it and the picture is great, but for some of the pickier people out there the TV does have backlight glow at the left and right edges (especially the top right corner). You can only really see it when a completely black screen is displayed (or I suppose a very dark scene, but I've never noticed it otherwise). From what I understand about edge lit LED technology this seems normal, but other brands may do a better job of minimizing it.

5Perfect TV
By Patrick Louise
Simple review for TV Programing, Video Games and BlurayOk, 1st things 1st. Update the TV!Meaning just get any USB device and drag over the firmware update from the Phillps website and this TV works like a dream. Its very simple so don't let that scare you into not buying this tv. All new tv's have firmware updates now. Its very common.I can't speak for the tv before the update because I did it right away.Anyway, on to the review! ^_^1st TV ProgramingI have Direct TV I gotta say movies and shows simply look amazing. The picture is crisp and pops out at you. The newer the tv show your watching the better it will look. HD programing is a must of course. No Lag or jiddering or whatever other reviews say.Now for Video games. I have a Ps3 and have played it a fair amount already and There's no lag at 1080p 120hz at all. And thats set at maximum I don't know how some reviews say there's a lag maybe thats before the update. But video games look impressive, and again the picture just seems to pop out at you. I play alot of sports and fighting games which of course has alot of action and fast movements and I'm seeing things I never saw before on my old CRT HDTV. There's just so much detail now that the creator's of the games put into it that I can now see, when before you simply didn't pick it up just looking at it.Now for maybe what alot of you are buying a 120hz tv for.. The Bluray Movies.I gotta say the picture looks.breathtaking My Dad who's a old timer when it comes to electronics who's been saying a tv is a tv...even said... Wow this was worth it when he saw the Dark Knight IMAX parts on Bluray. It simply looks like there right in the room with you. Like your right in back of them or on the side of them.. or your in the room when there's a explosion. Also the Speakers Some reviews say there low.. Honestly I don't even have it close to middle on the volume setting and the sound is like everywhere. You get the surround sound and HD sound all in one.Ive been looking at getting a new HDTV for 6 months, looking at samsungs, Sony's,LG and so on, and this TV simply was the best deal for 120hz.I bought this tv when it was on sale for $599 and Paid $547 with tax included . At the Target store(15 percent off) (Target Card) and 10 percent off purchase coupon. So once they put this tv on sale again or if the current price (629 in store) jump on it. Its a perfect tv for those making the jump to LCD-LED technology. The 120hz makes a huge difference so stick with brand that you already know, they haven't been around a long time for nothin ^_^.Sorry if this is a nothing but positive review for the tv but I'm just calling it like I see it. This tv is the best led your going to get on the market at this size with 120hz. Trust me I looked all over the place :)

3Good TV, HD picture not the best
By FwaysNGreens
We wanted a second TV for a newly finished basement, and we didn't want to pay too much so the $600-ish price was appealing. The TV is easy to set up. I did load the firmware update on a thumbdrive and updated the TV at start-up. That was easy. Some other reviews have commented on the sound. We're OK with it. Others have said that the remote is a bit sensitive, and we generally concur with that, but it's no big deal. I find the remote overall and the TV in general quite easy to use and configure. Those things are nice, but TVs like this are really about the picture. I read the glowing reviews of this TV's picture and was excited to see it. Overall, I have to admit that I'm a bit disappointed. Our other TV is a Samsung 40" C630 and I think it definitely has a superior picture to the Philips. I have tried all the different picture mode settings and tinkered with the individual items (brightness, contrast, color) but I just can't get it close to the Samsung. In particular, thin-lined objects such as golf clubs or the edges of a white shirt against a colored background show clear jaggies and aliasing. I also can't get grass to look just the right shade of green. In general, the Samsung's picture just looks crisper and better defined. The Philips picture is by no means bad, but I can notice the difference.

5Quality product, fair price
By Donna Hoffner
Television was easy to set up. Had Netflix up and running over wifi in minutes.Picture is clear and crisp, tiny amount of light bleed on pure black screen, but have not noticed it on any of the content I have viewed yet. Has a superb viewing angle.Used built in speakers to test their functionality, they are of average quality. I would say for casual watching they are adequate. I choose to use the digital optical to an amplifier to use the web apps. The built in apps provide great functionality although the webtv application itself seems to not flow very well and has considerable lag while rotating through the list of available applications. The set itself is thin, and as a package I would say it is very aesthetically pleasing. The base feels solid and the on-set buttons are easy to press. I would say the remote, while providing plenty of functionally, it's physical shape seems awkward.I am so far very impressed and glad that I made this purchase. Also, at this price with built in wifi and web applications it feels like a steal.

4Great for the price
By Sumeet Kumar
Following are my observations1) Picture quality not upto the standard of Samsung, but not bad either. This is noticeable in a showroom where both TV's were placed side by side. I tinkered around with the settings of toshiba and was not able to reproduce picture quality of samsung (UN46D6300). But on its own, the picture quality is very enjoyable and definitely acceptable.2) Speakers are substandard. Will not be enough for a large living room.3) For the price, this TV has lots of features (For e.g. wifi internet support, helps in reducing one wire going to my TV).After using the TV for couple of weeks, I can say that I will make the same choice again, and do not regret this at all.

1Want to love it, but significant flaws!
By G. Shockey
*UPDATE*It it now December 22 and I finally came to a solution with Toshiba. This nightmare is finally over, after various tech visits, 2 panel replacements (with the second one being DOA) and a board replacement, and close to 6 months of fighting and arguing with Toshiba I have received a store credit for toshiba-direct. Not as good as a full refund, but I'm glad just to get rid of the thing. During the second panel replacement a helpful tech had the television apart during a repair and informed me the issues I was having was unacceptable and the wiring/connectors they used were the flimsiest and cheapest he had seen. He had to call and request a 3rd panel replacement AND new wiring harnesses to fix issues with the wiring in the set as well. I did not have go through yet another repair, as Toshiba finally agreed to issue a credit and scheduled a pick up for the shipment.By this point I had already replaced it with a Panasonic Plasma (st30 series) and couldnt be happier! As mentioend before, I have owned previous Toshiba televisions and not had issues, but be forwarned of their decline in quality.*UPDATE*While waiting for my scheduled home service visit my problem worsened to where the sound and video would cut in and out, and dead pixels started appearing. The last service visit was a joke. After being told by Toshiba and Pinnacle services (the contractor conduct the second repair) that the main board would be replaced, rescheduling the appointment to make sure the part would be in so the tech could conduct the repair, the technician came WITHOUT the part to do a "diagnostic visit" on the television. He concluded the MAIN BOARD and the PANEL needed to be replaced, and he would order both parts.I called toshiba "Case Managers" immediately after he left. I basically refused to get off of the phone until I spoke with a supervisor, which never happened. First, James was sarcastic, not open to listening to any problem I have, and hung up on me after arguing with me that would do nothing else but schedule another repair visit. That means I would have to stay home from work yet again, and in the meantime be stuck with a faulty television which I had bought new. After being hung up on I called back and spoke with Brianna, who I had the same result with. She was rude, closed off, and acted like I was a bother to interrupt her day. This resulted in me being hung up on again because I wanted to speak to their supervisor and make a complaint against the product AND the way I was being treated by customer service. So I called back AGAIN, and after a few minutes of arguing she finally began to answer my questions. There is a serious lack of any sense of responsibility to the consumer. They both informed me they were the highest level there I could speak to, although James had to put me on hold to speak to his supervisor on my behalf. From a customer standpoint i find this ridiculous, and quite frankly lousy!I waited a couple weeks, never hearing back from Pinnacle regarding the repair so I called them. They explained only one part has been ordered and after that repair, then they can re-assess and order the panel if needed. The following day I received a follow up call from Pinnacle explaining it would probably be late October before the board was received and they can send a tech out!I will NEVER buy another Toshiba product and advise all consumers to steer clear! not only is the quality decline unbelievable, but the customer service is a joke! They obviously don't care about delivering a quality product or a decent customer service experience!*UPDATED REVIEW FROM 4 TO 1 STARS*I am so fed up with this television and Toshiba! After having my panel replaced, a wide vertical band started appearing on the left hand side of the screen, just as before. Also, I noticed the sound popping in and out on all of my HDMI inputs. This tv is GARBAGE! I have asked Toshiba to replace the unit since I paid for a NEW tv, but they insist on continuing to send out techs to repair parts. After replacing the LCD panel, the next part to be repaired is the main board. I guess we will see if that fixes the problem. I have had to miss work waiting on repair techs who do not stick to their scheduled appointments (hours late!) and would have rather just stayed with my Panasonic 37 inch (which the 46 inch Toshiba replaced). This is costing me time and money having to deal with this junk product! I NEVER had problems with the Panasonic and I will NEVER buy another Toshiba product again, I advise anyone thinking of buying this TV to stay away and purchase ANY other brand!=================================*UPDATED REVIEW FROM 2 TO 4 STARS*Toshiba agreed to change the panel and sent a repair tech to take care of the job. The old panel was obviously defective... HOORAY to Toshiba for providing the replacement so easily, BOO to 6ave for their lousy return policy. It took a little chasing down but Toshiba made it right, no questions asked. The backlight bleeding and clouding seems to be fixed, no edge-lit LED is perfect but it looks as good as it possibly could. The picture is now even and crisp, and I can enjoy watching movies in the dark again. The channel lag is still there, but firmware updates seem to have addressed the internet apps freezing and the picture controls reseting. The update also installed skype, which you can use by plugging a webcam into the usb port. Not five stars due to the channel surfing lag and the initial letdown.=================================I have owned various LCD TVs, ranging from Samsung to Panasonic to Toshiba. This is my second Toshiba television (my first LED) and I must say I will never buy another Toshiba television again. To give credit where its due, the color of the picture is great, the design of the tv is sleek and elegant, the 120hz is smooth, and the features/internet capabilities are great. BUT the flaws of the TV itself take away from the potential this TV has.The backlight bleed is HORRIBLE on this set. The right side of the screen is twice as bright as the left, which is very uneven and distracting. I have turned the backlight to ZERO and it is still very prevalent. during dark shots it looks like someone is shining a flashlight onto the face of the set. It's terribly distracting during dark movies. Forget about watching movies in the dark. The uniformity of the screen is awful. The internet apps seem great at first, but after a while there have been several lockups and the set will not allow me to access the widgets or the Net TV features. I've had to call Toshiba customer support regarding this, and reset my tv several times. Since then there have been several times that my tv picture settings have suddenly reset themselves, leaving me to recalibrate my picture over and over again. There is significant lag when changing the channels using the remote. There is at least a 3 second delay between the tuner changing stations and the picture locking in on the set. Its very annoying when trying to channel surf. I've never experienced another tv like this.I have owned a previous Toshiba television from a few years back. I had ZERO problems with it, this television has opened my eyes to the decline of quality in Toshiba products. I bought this based on my good experience with Toshiba in the past, but NEVER again.Unfortunately I bought this from 6ave (from their site) and they have ZERO return policy on tv's 37 inches and larger. They defer you to the manufacturer warranty. BUYER BEWARE.I am currently wrestling with Toshiba's warranty and service department. On Toshiba's end the phone support has been friendly enough and I've been informed a tech will provide onsite assistance but I've been given the run around by Nexicore (the 3rd party repair service). Toshiba has given me several case numbers to contact Nexicore, I have called Nexicore twice and they have no record of any case number for my situation.I really wanted to like this TV, but I just can't. this is the only TV purchase I have ever regretted. Two stars for the potential the TV had, but its a fail.

1Buy Something Else....
By K. Miller
On short notice I had to replace a very nice Samsung 26" LCD HDTV. My space required nothing wider than 28"...so I was limited in choices...and shut out of the most common 1080p 32" units available.I purchased the 29" LG LED TV.Pros: It is cheap at around $300. It fit the space I had...the TV was 26.3" wide. The "pros" end there.Cons: The screen resolution is worse than you would expect from a 720p resolution on satellite (DirecTV).The picture adjustments, although aided by a nice on-screen app, are clumsy. The results from the app make you want to try it yourself for color and contrast balance. The instructions and documentation are very poor. I called Amazon tech support, which provides 30 days of free advice on this unit. Even they had no documentation for the unit. The component inputs and outputs are very bare bones. In fact, the unit provides NO AUDIO ANALOG output. Therefore, you can forget about piping this into your media center receiver. The downside of this is that the speakers on the TV are subpar...so you better be using this in a small room.Compared to the 8 year old Samsung I was replacing, the interfaces available on this LG were primordial. Did I mention it was CHEAP?The stand is not adjustable, so that if you need to center the unit in a media cabinet, you just need to stack up some books. The overall styling is very generic...Over all, if you have time to consider other units, do so. There is no reason to waste time on a unit like the LG when better 1080p units should be available soon in this size (29") class.Amazon gladly offered to take the unit back, but had no replacements in the size range. Maybe its time to turn off the tube and do some reading.

55 Stars. Here's why...
By Peter
In considering what TV to buy my parents, I had the apparent choice between buying an led LCD or a plasma. I opted to get the led, but you wouldn't really be wrong to go the other route. My parents just wanted any TV that was bigger than 50 inches while I, being somewhat of a techy, needed to find the best TV over 50 inches. Well, here you have what I would call the third best TV over 50 inches (the 8500 and 8000 models being better) at the time of this review. This is the first of Samsung's new line of lcds to come out this year, and it narrowly beats out last years 6 and 7 series TVs by offering a better contrast ratio (4,000,000-1 vs. 3,000,000-1) for virtually the same price point. Otherwise, it's pretty much identical after reviewing the specs. Newer is better though in this case also because of the firmware upgrades and other fine improvements in engineering and technology. The TV was delivered about 5 days after I purchased it through Amazon, and it took about 15 minutes to set up. Out of the box the thing looks incredible. It's as thin as a blackberry! Some assembly was required with a phillips head and about 10 screws to attach the tv to the stand, but it was only 4 steps total and added to the suspense. After plugging in literally two cords (the hd component cables and the power cord) you are up and running. When the picture came on it was CRYSTAL clear. It puts every other TV I've seen to shame. You can go to Best Buy and do a side by side comparison and you won't find anything better. Forget about the plasma, this is the way to go. I could describe in more detail how great the picture is, but suffice to say it's flawless from movies to news to sports. Even if this is not your first HDTV, you will notice a big difference. I bought a 32" 240 mhz set in Decemeber and this tv is in another league. The LED side panel illumination works well, and there is very little adjustment of the settings necessary to achieve true to life picture quality."True to life" will be understood in a new way when you buy this TV. The longer it has been since your last TV purchase, the more breathtaking this advancement in technology will be. Regardless, this will be a TV that will have a useful life for years (longer than a plasma) and will always look amazing. That being said, I would get the warranty (2 years) for an extra 170 or so.Note: I chose lcd over plasma because lcds are noiseless and don't have the risk of picture burn-in. The 58' plasma I was looking at is the same price. This TV is better than plasmas priced less at the time of the review. If price is the main concern, I might do an in store side by side comparison with cheaper plasmas to see if the difference to you is worth the money.

5Amazing TV, but may be too big for my room
By M. Leingang
I went to a local electronics store to buy a 46" LCD to replace the Samsung 46" LCD I just broke and ended coming home with this. F ry s had it on sale for 1 5 0 0, so we decided to spend the extra 6 0 0 to buy this. I was torn about not buying the Samsung TV with the Internet functions (Netflix, Pandora, etc..) but we have the PS3, which makes up for it. We had to decide between the Samsung Models LN46C630, LN46C650, UN46C6300, UN46C6500, and this model UN55C6300. They were priced and 8 7 9, 1 0 3 9, 1 3 2 9, 1 4 9 9, and 1 4 9 9. We were only looking at Samsung because we have had only good experiences with Samsung until I accidently hit the LCD :(( (Crack!!) Long story short we walked out with the 55"On to the Review:Before purchasing this TV, please consider your room size. We are about 10ft away from the TV and this is about as close as you want to be. There is a big difference between a 46" and 55"The setup was easy. The size of the box makes it difficult for one person to carry it but the TV is light enough for one person to lift it. The first step is to attach the back plate to the base with 5 screws, next it is suggested to use two people to put the TV on the base. I was able to do this step by myself. It has tabs that latch in and 5 screws to attach the TV to the base. All 4 HDMI Ports are located on the side, so may need to use the cable management system that comes with the TV. There is also a component video connection. There is no COMPOSITE video connector, which is a slight con for me because I need to buy a new connector for our WII. So if must have a composite connector on your TV then this TV is not for you. I did not dock the TV any stars for this because I could have looked closer... Besides composite to old school and I do not mind buying the component cableThe TV powers up fairly quick and noticeably faster than our 550 model I killed..The clarity of this TV is amazing, the colors really pop out and are well defined. It is almost like the people on the screen are in the room with you. I thought Blu Rays were unbelievable on our 46" LCD, it is trippy watching them on the 55" screen. Talk about seeing the pores on people's faces. Maybe it is a little too good of a picture :D (I know, no such thing) There is defintely some reflection from the TV but not enough to bother us.The sound is on par with our previous Samsung, which not great for audiophile people but more than enough then we need for our family.Because it is a LED LCD it is thin. It is a little over 1" thick. Not as thin as the 9000 series but I do not have that kind of money laying around :)I highly recommend this TV for anyone with a room larger enough to accomidate it. I am not having any buyers remorse. If anyone has any questions please post a comment and I will try to answer them.7/18/2010 Update - Just a quick 2 month update. The TV continues to amaze and the Blu-Ray are just insane on this TV. I see the electronics store has 6500 model for 200 more than we paid for this

5Wow!
By Island girl
We have had this tv for 2 months and it just doesn't seem like it could possibly be any better. The colors are so true and there is so much depth that it actually seems 3D at times. When you play a Blu Ray the colors pop even more and you really feel like you are part of the picture or scene. I have done a double take at times because it appears so life like! We love this tv and are so happy when we get a chance to relax and watch it (not often enough!). Wall hook up was a breeze and it has enough HDMI inputs to make it even easier. I wouldn't recommend the Samsung Blu Ray player though if you are running everything thru a receiver. Samsung's "Any net" gets confused about what you are trying to do. Or at least the Universal remote doesn't recognize that the tv is in control of the Blu Ray player. (Or maybe it's me who gets confused on what it is trying to do!) Anyway, I can't imagine any other tv delivering a better picture than this one. You will enjoy it immensely!.

5Fantastic television: phenomenal picture, features galore, good looks, but PRICEY!
By J. Steven
This television replaced a Sony KDL-40S2000 I had purchased. During my 30-day return policy I realized if I were to invest (ha!) in a LCD television I should get one with a full 1080 resolution. I returned the KDL-40S2000 and got this model.Out of the box the television is gorgeous, however, a bit wider and thicker than my previous Bravia. Not a problem for me, but check the measurements before you buy.Picture quality is phenomenal; previous to this set I've always been a tube/CRT guy due to their better picture quality when compared to plasmas and LCDs. I think the technology has finally caught up with CRT quality with this TV. Great (but not perfect) black levels and more detail than you really need in a 40" television. I will say there is a difference between a 720p panel and 1080p panel in my tests. Motion on high definition sources is also very good. The picture quality on standard definition sources could be better, but I am watching less and less standard definition every day.I was surprised by the amount of tweaks and features present on this television. A few notable features include: A full pixel mode which takes your high definition source and displays it pixel for pixel on your set, something I've never seen on a HDTV before. This feature does wonders for sources outputting a 1080 signal, including my modded Xbox which outputs the interface and DVD signals in 1080i. You can literally walk up to the TV and see the pixels 1:1 just like a computer monitor. This full pixel mode does have a caveat, some HD broadcasts have some extra pixels on the side or top of the frame that appear in this mode, but it's a fine trade off for the 1:1 resolution. The extra pixels are the result of the broadcaster and not the TV.The other valuable feature is the ability to adjust the wide viewing mode when viewing any sort of signal including high definition. My previous HDTV was locked into "Wide/Full" mode when watching 1080i content. The KDL-40XBR2 lets you choose which viewing mode when watching high-definition content. I use this feature when I watch inside the NFL on HBO-HD. They broadcast the program using a 1080i signal, but the show is actually standard definition displayed in a 4:3 frame (when is HBO gonna start shooting this show in HD?). The zoom mode allows me to zoom the picture and watch the program using the whole screen. I wouldn't have had this option with my previous HD sets.Because I don't like artificial sharpness or edge creation I always turn the sharpness down very low or off on my televisions. Most TVs look ideal when the sharpness is set low so no artificial edges are created. Don't do this on the KDL-40XBR2 because Sony has added some additional control with the sharpness adjustment. When I set the sharpness very low (Min - 10) I noticed the picture became very blurry, especially with text. At first I thought I had gotten a lemon, but later realized this is a feature. When the sharpness is low the TV seems to reverse the sharpness effect causing the picture to soften. Once I bumped the sharpness up to 35 the picture looked amazing with no artificial edges or blurriness. This functionality is different than most sets, but a perfect example of the level of adjustment the KDL-40XBR2 offers.Great looks, picture quality and enough tweaks to occupy hours fine-tuning the picture. This isn't a great set for someone who wants to take it out of the box and expect a great picture, but instead someone who is used to tweaking their A/V equipment to their preferences. Highly recommended if you've got the cash.

1Manufacturing defects affecting Sept '06 through present sets
By Randy Nelson
Sony's XBR line of LCD displays are near or at the top of the most amazing on the market in terms of picture quality, but anyone considering a purchase of an XBR2/3 model display should be aware that there is a significant manufacturing defect with displays produced post-August of 2006 that results in extremely splotchy or "cloudy" backlighting. During playback of dark content, clouds of bright spots can be seen across the display. Sony has yet to officially acknowledge this latest stumble in their production quality control, but do a search for "XBR clouding" and you will find plenty of discussion about this very real problem.I have personally owned this display and the defect was significant enough to warrant a return. I opted not to get a replacement knowing that so many of these displays in the channel are affected. When (hopefully not "if") Sony is able to remedy the production problem and get non-defective sets to retail, I would easily rate it a five-star product and re-purchase one for my home theater.

5AMAZING TV...But....Clouding Issues are a problem!
By Woots
I have owned a 46xbr3 for over a month now. I would 1st like to say that the image of this TV is awesome. The menu options you have to tweak the look of the image is very very detailed. It helps if you run component and HDMI signals and need to have different tweaked settings to optimize look and reduce pixelization. 1080p with your playstation 3, blu ray or hd dvd players. The tv does not run 1080p component, only hdmi and vga, so your xbox 360 will have to run in 1080i (still looks great). The xbox 360 does run 1080p through vga input on this tv but xbox360 makes the screen look washed out.Clouding Issue:There is however a manufacturing defect that is not officially published by sony and no recall is yet in effect. The Sony LCD flatpanels XBR2/XBR3 40"/46"/52" screens have a greater then 50% chance to have a defect nicknamed "clouding". I am one of those unlucky buyers. What "clouding" basically is, is white puffy looking background lighting, when screen is black. This is not to be confused with non uniform lighting often seen in PC lcd panels; This is much worse and much brighter and heavily blotchy. For most people with this problem (including myself) you can only see this clouding during times when the screen goes black. (credits at the end of the movies, transitions between commercials to tv shows, dark parts scenes in movies and shows.) During these dark scenes they stand out like a sore thumb and make viewing distracting; due to the fact they are very bright and whitish. My experience is the longer the TV stays turned on the brighter these clouds get. When you 1st turn on the Tv they are very faint. They also have an odd habit of shifting around the panel very slowly over the course of weeks. (as strange as this may sound) I have found the clouding does not discolor or overbrighten the screen when the TV has full colorful images on it. This is why this problem is tolerable and I did not demand my money back, its still not acceptable though. I have read a few users say their clouding is so bad it effects the colors and makes them washed out. Thankfully I have not seen that. Please do not take my word for any of this I encourage you to be a critical thinker and go out on google and seek this "sony lcd clouding" issue. I am doing my part for the small community of us who are stuck with this sad problem overshadowing what is otherwise an absolutely great HDTV.In closing this TV is beautiful looking but when you spend this much money you don't want things like this bringing down your morale over the product. If you buy this TV you could be one of the lucky buyers and get an untainted screen and most stores give you a 30 day return policy. I have also heard (not confirmed) that the newest manufactured models have fixed this issue. I gave the product 5 stars despite the flaw, because even with this flaw I love this TV.Best of luck with your HDTV purchases. Hope this helps.
