4Good all-around
By Andrew Pleasants
I bought this TV as a do-it-all device. I wanted to get a FP LCD monitor for my computer, and I was looking into panels that had multiple inputs. I wanted to be able to use it to play games and watch DVDs as well be able to use it for my computer. I figured while I was at it I might as well equip myself with something that can handle HD signals and I can watch tv on as well. The following is my take on its performance in said areas:PC:As a computer monitor it works very well. I am EXTREMELY picky about this type of thing and I wouldn't say it was good if it wasn't. I use it primarily as a PC monitor and I would rate it's pc performance a 4 out of 5. To get the best picture you need a decent video card and a decent VGA cable(read: WUXGA or UXGA and some cases SXGA because of the high resolution of the panel). DVI->HDMI does not display well, you can use it in a pinch, but it will not look right, the tv was not designed to use this as a pc input. VGA works just fine, but you have to be sure you enable your resolution to match the native resolution of the monitor (the same is true with ANY LCD FP if you want the best picture quality). The native resolution of the panel is 1366x768... you can enable 1360x768 and it will chop 3 pixels (you dont lose any visual data, it just doesn't use these pixels) off of each side. Look for a program called "powerstrip" if you can't get your desktop to accept that resolution by default. If you choose not to use a widescreen desktop, then set the monitor picture size to 4:3 instead of Wide and use a desktop resolution of 1024x768 (the height of 768 ensures that you are still using native pixels). If you have trouble getting games to run at 1360x768 this is also a good option (set the game res to 1024x768 and change the picture size on the monitor). The picture quality is crisp and clear. There can be some very minor "ghosting" effects around certain colors/texts which can be aggrevated by a poor quality VGA cable. For the most part you will not notice this unless you sit extremely close to the panel or you display odd color combinations (i.e. fine bright blue text on a black background blurrs a little bit). As I said, I am extremely picky about this type of thing and if it was bothersome enough to return the monitor, I would. As with most LCDs it favors red a little bit and sometimes there can be a bit of boldness/bleeding on strong red in tight spaces (like a bright red bolded font). As far as pc games go it performs beautifully. Games are crisp, vibrant and clear. Best of all there is no response time "ghosting". This is something I was very concerned about because I play a lot of CS, BF2, etc. This monitor responds just as quickly as my CRT. I noticed absolutely no ghosting.Note: Most games today have command line options to set their resolution to special/custom sizes. The widescreen res you are looking for is 1360x768. Some games (like CS1.6) do not specifically support 1360x768 but do have wide aspect resolutions that still work well, but there is slight interpolation using non-native resolutions that will cause things to look a little different (still very very playable). And if all else fails you can always use 1024x768 and set the monitor to 4:3.Games:When not using it as a pc monitor I use it mostly to play PS2 and Xbox. I purchased component cables for both (which I would highly recommend) so I will comment on that. Both systems are very crisp and very clear. There is NO ghosting whatsoever and I read that others had problems with delay in response and lag between input and action on-screen. I have noticed no such thing. Again, I am extremely discerning about this type of thing and if that were the case, I would have returned it. Perhaps they had faulty panels or were using odd input sources. As far as component goes, they play VERY well. Again I would rate this 4 out of 5 because I have noticed a strange problem with PS2 displays. In certain PS2 games when there is very fine detail or there is some type of filter/mask/blur effect in the game, the panel seems to display it incorrectly. Its really hard to give an example, but its like if there is a blur effect on a shiny object, instead of the blur being uniform and fading, it has something of a checkerboard pattern. It is akin to trying to reproduce 32-bit color in 24 or 16-bit mode on a computer... it takes the two closest colors and checkerboards them together so that it seems like its one solid color. I have only noticed this in a handful of games, and even in those games it is usually restricted to whatever the softening/blurring effect is on. If you want a good example, pop in Final Fantasy Tactics for PS1. The game seems to have a full screen blur on it, I suppose to soften the sprites and make it more fluid. However, when using component cables (I have tried 2 different cables) the screen just seems to have a checkerboarded pattern instead of a fluid/smooth fading/softening to it. A minor gripe (except for in FFT since it takes up the whole screen) but a gripe none the less. I dont know if its the panel itself, the way the PS2 outputs to component, or perhaps just my panel. But I can say that I dont notice it on Xbox or on the pc. The only other game on my desk that I can think of that displays the problem is Mega Man X8 (which looks sweet in progressive mode, just hold down X and triangle as the game boots). Around some parts of the characters (easily seen on Zero's sigma blade) there is a shine/blur effect and it does the same thing.TV:I dont have HDTV or digital cable for that matter, so the standard signal is decent at best. Very watchable, but it performs like all LCDs do when using a non-digital/HD signal. No gripes.DVD:Crisp, clear and vibrant. I don't have component cables for my dvd player so I havent watched any in progressive scan yet, but via PC and PS2 (SCPH30001, no progressive) it looks fantastic (I think I actually prefer the PS2). I can only imagine it with a pro-scan set top.Bottom line:As long as your panel is in working condition and you have the right equipment for it, it makes a dynamite PC and videogame monitor. Thats the whole reason I bought it so I can assure you that I am very critical about those features. I don't know why other reviews are stating it doesn't perform in those areas when it does. Don't be shy of this model if you want to use it for a PC, games, dvd or a TV. It shines in all categories, its not extremely expensive and its about the perfect size as an all-in one without being too big a monitor or too small a TV. I recommend it.

I'm not sure how I lucked out with deal but I'm not going to complain. I went to Circuit City to look for a 20+ inch LCD TV and compared 10-15, really leaning towars the Sony or Samsung models. When I was about to leave the salesperson asked if I had seen the LNR238W yet. They hadn't received any in the store yet but it was on their website as a 'Coming Soon' item for $1,099. I went home and looked online for the model and was able to find it on Amazon for $850.00 with shipping. I bought it that same day and am glad I did. The best part of this TV by far is the picture quality. It's gives a nice crisp picture on any channel and handles fast motion with ease. The only issue I have is that it doesn't provide wall mounts that will work with this model, so for now I have it on it's base. All in all, it was a great deal and I'm surprised that Amazon is now asking $1,000 for the same model two weeks later.

5excellent purchase
By K. West
I know nothing about LCD/HDTV/digital/plasma, etc. I just know what looks good and this does. The picture is sharp and incredibly clear. It was easy to set up with my Replay TV and DVD player. There is no glare even on a sunny day with the blinds open. Viewing is great from anywhere in the room. It is small and light weight, so I can easily move it when needed---it replaced a TV that weighed 50 lbs and required my godson's help to move.I love it!

4Impressive 3D HD TV in spite of poor Voice Control Features
By Chris from Michigan
As with any major purchase I did so much research before selecting the Samsung UN60ES7500 60-Inch 1080p 240 Hz 3D Slim LED HDTV. I looked at all the major brands including LG, Sharp, Toshiba, Panasonic, and Sony. I spent several weeks in my free time doing this, reading and comparing specifications, and checking customer reviews on sites like Amazon and Google Shopping. Where available for each model I looked at I read CNET and Home Theater site reviews as well.Based on the available technologies I had to decide between Plasma and LED for starters, and then Active or Passive 3D. From my research online I discovered there were proponents in each camp, and finally I reached critical mass and realized without some hands on comparison I would never be able to decide. My older son and I went down to the local Best Buy and basically tried all the brands mentioned above and both active and passive 3D technologies. The Samsung UN60ES7500 immediately blew away the biggest myth I had read of with Active 3D and that's not having enough of a viewing angle when move away from the center of the screen. In 2D and 3D TV we could see the picture fine when being on so much of angle where you wouldn't be able to see the front of the TV!The TV picture for both 2D and 3D is FABULOUS! Totally blows away, as I would expect, my 5 year old 50" Panasonic plasma, and my 2 year old LG 22" LED TV. I could not be more pleased! On the rare occasions I use the pass-through mode of my AV receiver, the sound quality if the TV speakers is decent; certainly far better than the two aforementioned TVs.Of course while doing my research I came across complaints for this line of TVs from Samsung, such as you could not use a mouse or keyboard with it, but under mine int he setup mode are setting for a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard. I'll have to try that on a later date and update this report. I also read complaints of different color lines down the display, light bleeding around the edges, and other issues, but as I said previously the picture on this unit is amazing!More than a few of the reviews I had read mentioned the Samsung line my TV was a part of were turning themselves off for no reason. I'm theorizing this might have been because they had automatic power setting set to do this, or perhaps the voice command feature misinterpreted some TV dialog as a command to turn off the set. One reviewer mentioned when they removed theirs from the network this issue stopped, mine has been on my home network since the day it arrived, with no issues. The wireless network setup was quick and easy in fact and I've had no network related issues on either of my home wireless networks, both of which use different security settings.Speaking of Voice Commands, this is one of Samsung's 'Smart TVs', meaning you can use a set of predefined commands and hand gestures to control it.It should be noted I did NOT buy the set for these features, which is good because they are, in my humble opinion, not ready for prime time. Trying to get the TV to recognize, even with the TV muted, voice commands is a hit or miss proposition. It either does not recognize the initial command phrase, or it can easily misinterpret commands. How it thinks "TV Power Off"is the command for "Current Time" is beyond me. The hand gesturing also needs work. Trying to get the on screen menu to come up when holding using the waving gesture it expects, even after going through the setup calibration, rarely works, but get a bit tired and raise your hands while stretching, and Bam! it appears!Hopefully subsequent firmware upgrades will improve this, but if you main reason for getting a Smart TV is for these features, you will be sorely disappointed. The TV comes with a number of pre-loaded applications, such as a Netflix library and there is an application store you can choose more from. There are both free and paid apps. As the TV has a built in camera, there is also a Skype application. This is also a decent web browser; with a wireless keyboard and mouse this would be a very easy way to surf the web, check your email, etc.So, in closing, if you're looking for a TV based on being able to dump your remote and use hand gesturing and voice commands to control it, this is NOT the TV for you. You'll be very disappointed in the poor implementation of these features based on today's firmware. If on the other hand you're looking for a large screen, network connected 3D HD TV with a fantastic picture, a boatload of applications, and a plethora of other features this is an ideal purchase.Because of the poor implementation of the Voice Command and Gesturing features, I'd give this TV four out of five stars.Updated 6/8/2012Now that I've had this TV for just over a month I thought a brief update was in order. I've seen no issues that other people had reported such as the power going off, lines down the screen, dead pixels, etc. From a display standpoint for regular and 3D material this unit is fantastic and I am still blown away by the picture. It responds well to action scenes for TV and Movies, and for video games as well from my Xbox 360 and Home Theater PC.As to the Smart TV functions such as voice control and gestures, they still really stink but can be downright amusing at times! Try to get the gesture control to 'see' you and no luck.. Yawn or stretch a bit and there it is! What I really find funny is dialog on the TV will often pop up the dialog for voice control and it will think I want to turn off the TV.But again, I must stress did not buy the TV for that functionality. If these features worked well it would certainly be a plus, but since they do not my original rating of 4 out of 5 stars stands.Updated - 11/12/2012It's been just over six months now and I figured I'd add a quick update. With the Smart Features (Voice and hand gesturing) turned off the TV is perfect! I've not had any trouble at all with this unit in six months and the picture remains fantastic.

5This TV has it all and looks stunning
By J. Wilson
I love this product!!! Samsung has slammed it totally out of the park with the ES7500.... I think the picture quality is stellar, I don't see any of the bleeding/cloudyness etc that I hear people complain about. I did need to tweak the judder and blur reduction settings so movies didn't lose their depth of field, but overall this TV is amazing... I would highly recommend this to anyone! When I was at the store I looked at the ES8000 also, but honestly I couldn't see a difference in PQ... I guess the 8000 has micro uber dimming or something, but to me the 7500 has it all anyways, so I'm stoked....Voice control is awesome, touch remote takes some getting used to, but is very cool, and the TV is sooo sexy... I'll try to take a picture or two and upload them for others to see...Only bad note, the gesture control doesn't really work (but I didn't care about that feature)....oh that the whole thing with Amazon VOD still stinks, but hey I think this is the best TV you can buy for under $3000....3/23 Update.... I've added a photo for you to see... Its not the best, but I can you that unless you have the brightness blown out on the screen, there is no bleeding from the corners, which is the complaint I read about all the time.... maybe other folks like it brighter than me, but whatever, its an awesome screen!3/25 Update.... Watched Tron 3d (or part of it).... WOW!!! The 3D on the Tv is as good or better than cinema 3d.... I only watched 20 minutes or so, but I did not feel eye strain setting in... in fact over time it felt like I was just watching my tv normally, like the 3d was supposed to be there all the time. On a sad note, I had to turn off the voice control, because the tv was taking commands from its own programming... :) it almost turned itself off while I was watching Amazing Race for some reason.... got all the way to the final "OK" before I scrambled for the remote and canceled.... maybe that needs some work still...but the picture quality is shockingly good.

3Great Picture, but...
By VanDoos
I've had the TV for a month now and I can't get over how great the picture quality is, both in 3D and 2D. Gesture control and Voice Control takes some time to get used to...it's not as sensitive as the Wii or like-devices. Other than the bells and whistles that you're basically paying for, there is one major drawback that I'm having a heck of a time fixing/figuring out (because Samsung customer support is convinced it's user-error; which it could very well be...but as a warning to others please read on): major networking issues.I have it hooked up to my home network and all seems great in terms of playing vides/music/pictures via router, however, the TV's firmware wants to constantly update and stay connected, thus it automatically shuts off randomly and turns back on; no matter what input you have the TV on. A major annoyance. I unhooked it from my home network and all is fine now, just sucks that I can't enjoy one of the major reasons why I bought the TV. So be warned if you're buying this TV for not just the great picture but for the versatility of using it as an extension to your home network.

4QAM compatible, narrow viewing angle
By Peter Tangney
I have had this TV for about four months. It's a pretty good tv. I have my Comcast cable plugged right into the analog (NTSC) connection without a cable box. Searching for the channels didn't take too long, and even the sometimes hard to receive stations, channels 5 and 6 were also found. This TV is QAM compatible. So, if your cable provider broadcasts your local channels over clear QAM, this tuner can receive them. QAM works nicely for me. The HD quality on the ATSC tuner is noticeably better than standard definition. The only drawback I can think of is the narrow viewing angle of the set. If you're even a little off to the side the image fades noticeably, especially with skin tones.

1DP26746 *Warning-don't do it*
By W. Alexander
Lasted about 18 months before the screen went out. Looks like its the power supply and this TV is headed to the trash. Warranty of 12 months and good for just about that long. No problems till it went black. I'll not be getting another one of these. It's a shame that a company will stake there reputation on a product like this and not stand behind it. They will lose my business for the next 30 years and wonder why they went the way of the Yugo. Pay an extra 100.00 on another brand and save the money taking it to the dump.

5Love My Samsung!
By ThisIsMyPenName
I picked up the Samsung 51" D550 from Sears on the 12th. I'd only discovered the TV online a couple hours before buying it. Always wanted a Samsung and once I saw it in the store, I was sold. Had to have it.Received a pair [2] of Samsung's new 3100 3D glasses. [Will write a separate review for those.] Beware, this TV is HUGE. I swear, it didn't look this big in the store.Picture Quality is outstanding. Break-in isn't necessary. I ran slides for a day before using the TV regularly. No IR at all. Blacks are deep and rich, Colors are rich and life-like. I haven't had it professionally calibrated, just using settings I've found on the AVS forum and tweaking them to my likes.Settings are very, very customizable. SD programs are good. Soft at times but very watchable. Of course, HD/Blu-Ray/DVD content is out of this world. Audio is surprisingly excellent. Very clear and loud. I rarely go up above 11.Also no buzzing. I heard a slight noise when I set the picture settings to Dynamic but it isn't an issue since I won't be using. [That setting is too bright and saturated for my tastes.]3D is also great. I don't really have much experience in this area since this is my first 3D TV. There was no ghosting, trailing, or halo-effect. Same for the 2D to 3D conversion. I watched Avatar converted and the actual Tron: Legacy 3D blu-ray and both films look great. For anyone who loves the "Soap Opera" effect, Cinema Smooth works great. I love the effect so I've left it on.Overall, it's a great TV. Very happy with the purchase it. Great plasma. Lush colors, Deep Blacks, 3D, and great SD/HD quality.

5The best you can get for under a grand
By Gooner4Ever
I was in the market to upgrade from a 37" LCD and after much deliberation, soul searching, and navel gazing I decided that the PN51D550's size and features were too good to pass up. I'm not really a 3D kinda guy but I have two young kids so the inclusion of that particular bell and whistle was non-negotiable. Considering that Amazon had it for around $950.00 including shipping, well that was just too good to pass up. Log into the account, whip out the credit card, light a novena candle to ensure safe shipping and hope for the best (and it shipped just fine.)So far I've had this machine for about a week and I must say I've been relieved and ecstatic at my decision. I'm about fifty hours into breaking in the thing (I know, I know, unnecessary perhaps but I'd much rather err on the side of caution) and it's been a love affair from the get go. Like most HDTV's, watching stuff in standard def isn't pretty but it's passable. The real beauty comes when watching stuff in HD, when everything just comes alive. Blacks are inky, reds are redder than Lenin, and the images are clean enough to eat off of. If you've ever wanted to count the lines on Gordon Ramsay's face you've come to the right TV.Because I'm still doing break in, I haven't watched any BluRays on it yet, but I'll edit my review once I get around to doing that. I also can't comment on the TV's native audio quality because I have this hooked up to a receiver, which I'd highly recommend for anyone in the market for one of these. These sets were made to be complemented by 5.1, 7.1, or 7.2 channel systems. If you are planning on doing the receiver thing, just remember that this particular model does NOT support the ARC function so you'll need an optical audio cable as well as an HDMI cable when hooking up.EDIT, 7/16: After sheepishly remembering that BluRays with a 1.85:1 aspect ratio won't show black bars I tested out a few and the results were mesmerizing. The blacks on THE DARK KNIGHT were obsidian, as they were on TRON:LEGACY but alternately the vivid whites, oranges, reds, and yellows on that film were exceptionally vivid and incandescent. I also played a few laps of GRAN TURISMO through a PS3 and it was an out of body experience. It was like the textbook definition of every color being displayed, and with no visible lag whatsoever. Astonishing. I'm coming close to the 100 hour point and I can't wait to check out 2.35:1 stuff.I don't believe in giving out calibration settings because I believe that no two TVs, and more crucially, no two TV owners are going to see the exact same thing the exact same way but I will say that once you put the PN51D550 in Movie mode about 95% of the calibration is done, at least to my peepers.Regarding issues of buzzing, I've haven't heard any emanating from my set. I keep the set's volume at zero and let my receiver handle the audio but even when I have to rely on the set's native audio (like when I play the Wii) I hear no buzzing. Either I'm one of the lucky ones or my hearing is even worse than I thought it was.Another issue I've read about the PN series revolve around brightness pops, or fluctuations, that occur, especially when watching darker scenes. I have noticed these on occasion but they tend not to bother me. You have to have a sharp eye to notice them for they usually last for a split second before the set self corrects. When watching movies famous for their dark cinematography, like THE DARK KNIGHT or BLADE RUNNER, I've noticed maybe five or six brightness pops each viewing. Not nearly enough to bother me nor to inspire a brightness pops drinking game.As for glare, yeah, it's there. You might want to consider in advance where you're going to place this baby because in the middle of a sunny day with the blinds and drapes open this thing does a killer impression of a mirror. I've found though that when I sit off to the side a bit (and this TV has an amazing viewing range, like most plasmas) the glare is much less noticeable. When you're viewing at night and don't want to sit in complete darkness, consider placing your lamps either to the side or slightly behind the set to avoid or reduce glare. All told, I can't think of another major name brand TV that brings together the best combination of size, features, and quality for under $1,000. At this (admittedly early) stage, I can honestly say that this is the best TV I've ever had the pleasure of owning.SON OF EDIT, 9/15: After two and a half months, I'm still smitten. A couple more thoughts to share:1. I cannot stress enough the importance of a break in period so all those cute little plasmites can burn evenly. I was watching the special features on the TAXI DRIVER blu ray when I stupidly fell asleep during one of the Scorcese interviews (you know you're REALLY tired if you can fall asleep to him talking.) Of course after the interview ends, the disc goes back to the main menu which has bright yellow cursive graphics all over the place. Two hours later I woke up, ejected the disc, turned off the PS3, and found some faint burn in on the blank, black screen. After smacking my forehead in self punishment, I immediately turned on an HD movie channel and let THE RING run for about five minutes. When I turned the box off to check on the screen, voila!, burn in gone. A little preparation goes a long way.2. SD content looks a bit better now, though it's obviously no match for blu rays or 720p, or those rare 1080p, broadcasts. Watching stuff on channels like Antenna TV or TV Land is a lot less messier than it was when the TV was right out of the box. If have streaming services like Netflix or Hulu+ the quality varies. Newer content, especially on Hulu+ looks and sounds outstanding, but older, grainier Netflix content looks appropriately disastrous. Well mastered DVDs played through a PS3 look terrific.I'm still insanely happy with this set. Not for nothing do I refer to it as The Third Child.

5Great 3D TV for the money!
By Shoe
After doing extensive research, my wife and I decided on this TV. For under $1k, it was one of the cheapest 3D plasma on the market from a reputtable company. It also has cheaper 3D glasses as well compare to others. While most 3D glasses costs around $150 per pair, it was only $50 per pair for this Samsung from Amazon or other retailers. We have watched regular 2D movies to 3D and everything is great! It even does a great job of converting regular 2D movies/shows into 3D. I could not have asked for a better TV at this price. One feature that I really love about this TV is that it has an anti-burn program which prevents burn in. I did not know that this TV had this feature until after I bought it which is big plus since I sometimes play a little video game with the PS3. Another really nice feature is that it will automatically detect when you have a 3D signal and change the screen to the 3D setting. It will also send a signal to the glasses allowing them to be turned on. In fact the feature is so great that you will not even be able to turn on the glasses until a 3D signal is available. A very good feature with the 3D glasses for this TV is that it will automatically shut off after 30 seconds of not receiving a 3D signal so you do not run the battery down. The TV will also convert 3D to 2D if you get tired of 3D viewing. My only warning is that if you will be putting the TV in a room with a lot of light, you will get a lot of glare due to the glass screen. For a brighter room, you may/will want to go with an LCD. If you are planning for using it in a dark room, this TV will knock your socks off. The colors are some much more vibrant compare to an LCD with the same signal and resolution. I have an LG LCD 1080P which has a great picture but this plasma blows it away with how rich and vibrant the colors are.Things to remember if you are planning on watching 3D Blu-Ray movies with this TV:-3D capable Blu-Ray player like a PS3-HDMI cable (go with the best you can afford that can send 3D signals/data)-3D glasses (you will need one pair per person)

4Pretty good quality for a very good price.
By AJ McLaughlin
Let me start by saying that my television came promptly and in one piece, two days after ordering. I was very happy about that, and even happier that it wasn't busted up into fragments during shipping- so order with confidence. As for the television itself, the picture is pretty amazing. Some say you can't really tell the difference between 780 and 1080 with televisions of this size, but comparing it to my roommates television of the same size, mine looks clearer and crisper. No dead pixels so far and everything looks sharp in HD. It is also worth noting that the television turns on very quickly, without any beeping noises or space sounds. The sound quality is not bad at all. There is an option to simulate surround sound on the tv's speakers, which in my opinion, made it even better. The volume is good enough for me, and my bedroom is pretty large and cavernous. The TV also has enough HDMI ports for all my gadgets: cable box, XBOX, Wii, my laptop- they all fit. This is the only knock I have, and the reason it didn't receive 5 stars: When I went to attach the television stand to the bottom of the TV, the screws were absolutely obnoxious to get into the holes. They did not fit properly or easily and the screws were easily stripped. The end result is that, although it is firmly attached to the stand, it is wobbly and makes me pretty nervous about someone bumping it. If you plan to wall mount, don't worry about it- but I was unhappy with the way the stand was constructed.Still, a highly recommended purchase. The page doesn't say, but the tv comes with a 1-year limited warranty if you're concerned. I am not. I'm happy with my new TV!

1No customer service
By John P. Thesz
Owned my tv for right at 6 months when it failed. It was under warranty, so I called and the tech showed up the next day. Great! He orders 2 boards for it, they take a week. Ok, fine. He replaces parts, does not fix, and tells me it is the panel itself, which is no longer made and I have to get a replacement. Hmmm. He forwards my case to On Corporation (the company that actually makes RCA tvs) and I wait. Coming up on 2 weeks now, not a word. I call the number given to me by the tech, answering machine. I leave daily messages. Nothing. Wow.

5Sturdy Starter HDTV
By Kevin L. Nenstiel
My last HDTV, a Dynex, had problems with murky color in the earth tones. Because of this, half-lit scenes in my favorite shows tended to become unreadable. It made watching suspense shows taxing, but I thought it was just a characteristic of HD. This unit proves that's not so. It has bright, clear colors, and even darkened rooms and caves have enough definition that I can follow the action. It also has clear enough sound that I can enjoy my favorite cable music channels.Several previous reviewers have given this unit bad rates because of their run-ins with customer service. I can't speak to that, because I've had nothing but good luck with this unit, and have had no need to contact customer service. Therefore I can say, with a certain level of comfort, that I approve of this television. It does everything I need a TV to do, and it does it well, without running up my electric bills. Definitely a good, inexpensive TV for families, businesses, and dorms.

4Has clouds, but I still love it
By Travis Dockweiler
I previously had a Westinghouse 42" 1080p LCD that went bad after just 6 months! I used my service plan and got a full refund since they didn't even want to touch the thing. The only problem i've found that that the prices in 6 months actually increased and suddenly I found that 42" 1080p LCDs were less common.I first went with the Samsung LN-S4695D. I had some major issues with that so returned it for this. I originally skipped this Sony for the Samsung because it was cheaper. When I purchased this I knew of the cloud issue and had them deliver it and crossed my fingers. Turned it on and after awhile I noticed clouds. The problem in all honesty does not bother me AT ALL EVER. I think in the 4-5 months i've owned this i've noticed it once or twice. Please note that I almost NEVER watch TV in the dark. If you do, maybe it's more of a problem. Sony's claim that it's "normal" is such a joke. How could you ship out thousands of these LCDs with this issue and knowing it's there? I've knocked off a star due to this. For the price you pay on this thing (it was more expensive when I bought it months ago) you'd expect it to be perfect. My first Sony was. It's not true that there is no PERFECT TV out there. There is.Anyway, I immediately calibrated this using AVIA and DVE and the picture quality is even better than any previous TV i've owned by far. This thing has so many features in the menu system that you could spend hours just configuring it to get it right. I disliked the menu system on the Samsung and this one is so much better. It's really easy to navigate and not slow. This also has so many different types of connections. Three HDMI ports. Most people think two is enough, but I don't agree. I currently use all three. Switching inputs on previous Sony televisions was a pain. Now it's a little bit easier. To press a button to display 'external inputs' and switch to the one you want. You can even label the inputs. I have mine set to PC, Wii, PS3, Cable and DVD PLAYER.Games show no ghosting at all that i've noticed. A couple times i've noticed very slight motion smearing on really low quality cable TV. It's extremely rare and i'm going to blame my cable provider because it never happens on DVDs or anything else.I don't use the TV speakers but I do when I connect my HD antenna up. That's about once every 2 weeks for NBA games in HD. Some would complain it sounds bad but they've probably never heard sound from other LCDs. My mother's plasma display has such bad sound that it sounds like it's coming from a $2 speaker. Honest. It's impossible to listen to it it's so bad. The sound from the speakers isn't good, but acceptable. My guess is that a large percentage of the people that buy a TV this expensive have a home theater system. I currently use a Yamaha Sound Projector since i'm in an apartment. The design is much better than my Samsung I previously tried out. The only problem is that it will not tilt/rotate like the Samsung did. Not a big deal for me but it would have been nice. The design on the back is not good. It's hard to access all the HDMI and cable inputs. I'd imagine it's like this due to some people wanting to mount this on a wall? It's nothing that bad.HD-DVDs and Blu-Ray movies are pretty amazing on this thing. Same goes for Playstation 3 games. DVD movies even look good but it depends on the DVD quality. Old movies don't really look good. I'm mainly talking about DVDs that came out when the players cost a fortune. I've compared the picture quality between an upconverted movie and one that's not and I definitely notice a huge difference.I will admit though that my Oppo DVD player hates this LCD. It will display dark scenes but they will contain greenish tint/macroblocks etc. I thought it was the LCD but i've tried 5 others and this does not occur. I've tried many ways to fix this with not much luck. I currently use the Denon 575 and so far so good.Standard "Digital" cable still looks terrible in most cases. I don't have HD cable yet and my cable provider's picture quality is terrible. That's all. It's not the TV's fault. Too bad I can't get Satellite TV out here.I also was pretty impressed with the results I got when I connected my PC to this. Seeing your desktop at 1080i is pretty nice. I don't really use this feature though much. I've played a game that supports widescreen at that high of resolution (Final Fantasy XI) and it looks pretty good!Other than the few negatives above, I can't think of many. I've waited months to post a review. I really wanted to give it some time. So far i've not experienced many problems at all.The cloud issue might make it a risk buying this. Maybe they've fixed the problem already. Even with the cloud issue it's still a good TV. BTW my clouds are nearly impossible to see until I have a completely black screen and my lights are down. I have them on the top left and bottom left. When the actual movie plays they are GONE. Completely unless a scene is completely black, not just a little dark.If I run into anything bad i'll update this review. So far, so good!

4Wonderful!
By Maximum
We got this TV about a month or so ago and love it. It really shines displaying HD. Nature shows on HD Discovery are unbelievable with out-of-the-box color calibration seeming very good to my eye. I can still picture the vivid snake scales and close ups of Mantises (Mantisi?) days after watching them on this set.The only downside is that I notice some macro-blocking if I sit within about 6 feet. Not really a problem though since we usually sit further back. Also, I think this may be an issue with the content encoding rather than the TV itself.I've read in forums that some people are disappointed in the non-HD performance of the TV. However, while it really does shine in HD, I find it totally acceptable when viewing the occasional non-HD content.Definitely worth checking out if you are in the market for a high end TV and plan on watching lots of HD. I also can't wait to try this set with an XBOX 360 and/or PS3 :-)

3perfect TV set... unless viewed in the dark
By RRS
Honestly, this about the best 1080p TV you can buy right now. Everything about it screams quality -- the incredibly vivid image, the absurd amount of inputs, and the striking physical design. However, if you watch dark films (say, the Godfather, or Underworld: Evolution) in the dark (as in a movie theater), you will quickly be exposed to the set's weakness: the so-called cloudiness defect. On a totally dark image, you will see lighter-than-black patches, which will mean an uneven blackness level, and thus a distracting "cloud" effect when the camera moves through a dark scene. Don't be surprised if you end up feeling very frustrated at this.I give the set 3/5 stars -- but it would have been 5/5 easily if not for the clouding problem.

4Good not Great.
By CM
Great picture, once you get all the settings fixed, great sound, limited to useless online experience (unless you have an Ultimate NetFlix membership for streaming), and you must play games in PC mode or else you'll experience lag and jitter that will make playing any video game impossible.Make sure you turn off the auto lighting-adjustment nonsense installed on this TV, it will cause all sorts of problems.***update **** I have had this TV since early December and I still love looking at it, the only downside is the lack of any online content, apps or purpose with this television. Phillips really missed the boat on getting hooked up with Amazon, Netflix or other similar companies, if you want an online rich television this is not it.*** update 2 *** While the sound is terrific, there seems to be some kind of limit on the volume to protect against blowing the speakers and if you really want to rock out you'll need to purchase a sound bar or other speaker system.

2Plagued with Problems
By Stephen T. Jones
As a previous owner of a 42" Philips LCD TV I was expecting the same quality that was delivered in my first purchase. Out of the box this TV appeared capable of everything advertised but after a few days i realized that Netflix and the other web enabled programs were very limited in functionality. One peculiar item to mention is that if your using Netflix the sleep timer is not available, that is rediculous! You cannot search Netflix, only play whats in your Instant Queue. So I decided to buy a Roku box which solved all this nonsense. Not to mention this TV doesnt come with a wireless adapter.Secondly, and the most irritating thing is that even with the latest software update, 11-24-2010, the TV freezes about once or twice weekly, when this occurs the remote is not active so you have to unplug the TV and wait a second or two and then power it up again. It became such a hassle to reach behind the set to the power cord located low in the back,(my arm could just barely reach from the top) I started using a remote control power switch so i can turn off the power and restore from across the room.Next pet peeve is there is no analog out on the set, no earphone jack, nothing, so i need to buy a Gefen Digital to Analog device costing 50 dollars or more to be able to use my analog amplifier-speakers.I am very disappointed with this TV. My last Philips purchase I'm sure!

3The WIFI Mediaconnect Does Not Work
By J. Pingel
I got the set for under 700 bucks from Sams Club. It came with a wireless dongle. Was easy to set up and install. The Net TV(Netflix, vTuner and Twitter only options) function great. The WIFI Mediaconnect that is supposed to allow you to project your PC to the tv through your network does not. "IF" this had worked the limited offerings on Net TV could be overlooked. Tech support was little to no help. It would be a 5 star set otherwise.
