5Amazing picture!
By Leby
I recently purchased the Samsung 46 inch LCD (LN-S4692D). I bought this TV because I loved the style and the no glare aspect of an LCD was appealing to me. When I got it home, I was very dissapointed with the picture quality. The analog channels were unwatchable and I think buying a $3000 TV for a handful of HDTV channels is crazy. I then switched to this plasma because when I asked Best Buy associates to turn the channel to an analog channel, I was very pleased with the picture. I purchased it, took it out of the box and I didn't even have to make any changes! The difference between this plasma and my old LCD was astonishing. Almost every channel is crystal clear and the blacks are deeper than any other TV on the market (even the Pioneer). It's also brighter than the Pioneer, if that is an issue for you. If you are serious about picture quality, purchase this Panasonic. The 600U has a cooler design than the 60U and a cable card which are very important to me. The digital camera slot is pretty cool too. So, if you are in the buying stage and still wondering if you should go LCD or plasma, here is my take:Only go LCD if you play video games, have an extremely bright room and watch TV a lot during the daylight hours, or plan on using your monitor as a computer (LCD's are immune to burn in.) If you want a clear picture with eye popping color, buy a Plasma but not a cheap one, buy this Panasonic. Good luck shopping!

5Awesome Set!!!
By AlphaGeek
This plasma set is one of the best rated in the 42" category by most of the plasma sites.Love the twin HDMI connectors, which I use to connect an HDMI Panasonic DVD player, only one cable is required per connection for video/audio. Cable is inpervious to EMI (Electro Magnetic Interference) and Crosstalk, since it's digital and all it does is transfer ones and zeroes :) (Note, for this reason, there is NO need to spend $60 and up for the high end cables like Monster. I've bought the $4 cables from Amazon and they work great).Unit also has a cable card slot (which I don't use), PC port, and SD card slot for watching photos on your TV.The sound is very good, unit is rated at 31 W Output Power, and has four speakers (including two woofers), very good channel separation, and sound that is very nice and crisp, which should be more than enough for anyone except an audiophile in my opinion.Colors are vivid, and the images are ultra sharp.I've only had mine for about 10 days, so I have not calibrated mine yet until it's broken in. Also, I don't have HD service through my cable provider, since Time Warner is transitioning to Comcast in our area, and they're have been out of HD converters & DVRs for weeks now - Thanks Warner Cable...)The remote control is intuitive and well laid out, with big buttons, and a size that feels just right for even smaller hands. Keys are not backlit, but that's about the only fault I could find with it.A word of advice for folks that have bought plasmas and prospective buyers, is to take the set out of "torch" mode (very high picture setting, intended for showing the TV in brightly lit store showrooms, which increases wear on the screen phosphors) and lower this setting as when your unit is new to minimize burn in (see Panny's instructions below). After the first 100 hours, the unit should give you around ~60,000 hours of trouble free viewing, which translates to around 20 years of 8 hours/day viewing.Keep in mind that this phenomenon is not unique to plasma technology, CRT (Cathode Ray Tube), can and do suffer from burn-in if not used properly). Here's what you need to do per Panasonic instructions (should be applied to all brands, not just Panasonic). When your plasma TV is initially installed, the first 100 hours of use is known as the "break-in period." During this time, to minimize any risk of image retention, you should: 1. Make sure the plasma TV is in a viewing mode (aspect ratio) that completely fills the screen. The panel is shipped in this condition, in what is called the "Just" mode. 2. Turn down the Picture setting (in the Picture menu) to +0. 3. Briefly engage the 4:3 mode and confirm the side bars are set to "Mid", or "Bright". This can be adjusted in the Set Up menu. 4. Always return the display mode that fills the screen (such as Just, Zoom, Full, or H-FILL). 5. Try not to view channels with stationary backgrounds or logos for extended periods of time. 6. Avoid extended display of static images (video games, computer images, DVD title screens, etc.).After following the brake in period, you should buy a calibration DVD like Avia or Digital Video Essentials (~$40), to calibrate the unit and get the best picture possible.Mounting the unit on a wall is pretty straight forward. I've bought theEasyMount EZLCDP-02 (see my review on it, along with step-by-step install instructions), so overall I am very happy with our purchase.Pros: Awesome picture, sound, plenty of connectors, built-in HD tunner,PC port, sleek and sexy looking set, valueCons: Remote control's keys not lit

5Best 42" Plasma on the Market for the Money!
By G. Roberti
I was on the HDTV hunt for our family room for close to a year and my issue was that we had a cabinet built some time ago for a 36" giant tube TV, so I had size restrictions. I did my homework both online and in the stores and this is the TV we bought based on best picture for the dollar. We have this TV for about a month now...our source is Comcast HD Cable connected via Component Cables, and the picture is awesome! We also have an Oppo upconverting DVD player connected via HDMI and it too is unbelievably clear with near HD quality....plus a Sony 5 DVD player connected via Component input and that is very clear for a 480p picture.I too was going to go 42" Samsung DLP or Sony 3 LCD (they fit) but with the off axis viewing being somewhat tricky as to get that nice clear HD picture from anywhere in the room with them, the plasma was the way to go. You can sit ANYWHERE in the family room and get a perfect picture, period!..center, left, right, standing (watching football) and even the kids laying on the floor right in front get a great picture. We had a 8yo Sony 41" rear projection (standard definition TV that fit) and I guess you can imagine how much better this is. We also have 23" HD LCD in the kitchen and 32" HD LCD in our bedroom, so we are no strangers to the HD experience...but this TV is so bright and crystal clear, I can't tell put in words how fantastic the picture is. Like a lot of others, we looked at the model down, the 60U, but this model has an anti-glare screen, faster processing of the signal, MUCH better sound system, Cable Card capabilities (we don't use it), and the SD card input in the front so we can view our pictures from our digital cameras, which by the way, is a very cool feature!....and all this for around $100 to $150 more, which I think is really worth it. Plus, it has a little nicer look with the silver mixed with the black edge around the screen versus the all silver 60U model. The sound is so good, we find ourselves not using the surround sound system as much...the bass is very prominent and the voices are very clear, way better than your normal TV sound system. The onscreen interface for all the internal controls is very easy to use and if you look on some of the High Definition forums for this model on the Internet, some people have posted the settings they use to get an even better picture. We went with the Panasonic for another reason as well because it was the only model that had the controls on the FRONT of the TV for the Volume, Channel, etc....and the Auxiliary Inputs too (if I can't find the remotes, teenagers!). Most 42" plasmas we looked at...Samsung, LG, and Hitachi had all the controls on the sides of the screen and Auxiliary Inputs on the sides behind the screen so if you want to plug in the video camera or a video game, it's a bit of a hassle, especially in our cabinet. As for playing video games and being concerned about "burn in" issues, this TV has an anti-burn-in technology to prevent this from happening in terms of a counter scanning line input onto the screen and a screen saver that senses the still image. The Panasonic has the best screen, 9th Generation technology, with a 60,000 hour HALF LIFE....double the other brands! Now that this TV is in the $1.400.00 price point, it's a no brainer to purchase if you are in this price range. I bought from a brick & motar store in NJ that matched J&R's (NY) price at the time ($1,450) but I have 3 friends that have bought from Amazon...a 56" Samsung DLP, a Sharp 32" LCD, and a Sony XBR 60" rear projection LCD...each sale went flawlessly and delivery was great with all the TVs arriving in perfect condition (I installed all 3 TVs so I know). Buy this TV, you will be thrilled, and from Amazon with the utmost confidence!

5Perfect HDTV
By B. C. Russell
We reviewed the other (nearly identical) model on our show in March and I liked it so much I decided to buy one. I love Amazon.com, that's why the review is also posted here. When I got mine, I was overjoyed. You can check out the full review of the FN model at htguys.com, but here's the conclusion:What we liked * Awesome HD picture * Amazing black levels * Great, real color * Excellent detail * Two HDMI inputs * PriceWhat we disliked * Remote control * Menu system * Input switching with the factory remoteConclusionThe JVC HD-61FN97 is an excellent value. It looks great, does a wonderful job with HD content, a great job with DVDs and a pretty good job with standard definition TV. Blacks are good, contrast is solid, colors are excellent and detail is vivid. We try to look for great values to help you (and us for that matter) get a little more out of each hard earned dollar. You'd be hard pressed to find a better looking 61" TV at its price. It really helps bring the big screen home.

5Simply THE best regardless of price.
By conchyjoe
I've owned this display now for about 3 months. Simply put; I could not be happier. The picture is absolutely stunning and flawless. When watching Discovery HD on my DirecTV HD receiver; you are there! At the time of this writing Discovery HD is about 3 weeks into their "Planet Earth" series and to see the beauty of this incredible program on this display is quite frankly mind-boggling. Even the sound on the internal speakers which I only use occasionaly is great for internal TV speakers. The blue light on the front that some seem to be a little disturbed about that it could distract them is not distracting to me at all, but if it distracts you, it can be dimmed or turned off completely; so that is not an issue. The fan is as quiet as you're going to get and can only barely be heard with the volume completely down, and the wife and I sit only about 7 1/2 feet away.I was offered a choice at the store where I buy of getting the 60" Sony, the 61" Samsung or the 61" JVC all 1080p displays and all at the exact same price...The JVC was in my opinion the hands down winner in picture quality. That said, I'm sure either of the other 2 displays would also make pretty much anyone happy. In any case, trust me...with this display, and my Parasound pre/pro and amps, Aerial (FL, FR, and center) and Energy (4 rear channels) speakers, 2 15" DefTech subs all set up in a 7.2 configuration...As my wife now says: The theatres are so inferior. Ya gotta love it!I HIGHLY recommend this display to even the most discerning videophile.

4JVC HD61FN97...after very long study
By Buddyjay
I finally made a decision on which HDTV to purchase after a lengthy study. Although I am not taking delivery for a few days, I feel I know this tv very well. Also I hope this review can help others who are considering this unit. I was torn between the Sony XBR2, the Samsung 61" and the JVC. All are 1080p but the Samsung is said to have "wobulation" which is not TRUE 1080p so... I finally decided to purchase the Sony, ($3000) based on all the great reviews this tv had. I also am a believer in the LCOS technology over DLP. Anyway, I couldn't get the JVC out of my mind. Everytime I went to Best Buy to research tv's I kept seeing the unbelievable picture on the JVC. The Sony, no matter what store, never had a great "out of the box" picture, like the JVC. And no, the JVC hadn't been tweaked. When I saw the price included a $300 stand, it was just to financially a plus not to get the JVC. Technically a $1300 differance. I know many will say that the Sony is better but I couldn't deny the fantastic picture I saw at the store. I just can't justify spending $1300 more for the Sony. I'd rather have the extra money for maybe an HD-DVD player. After I take delivery, I will comment on the tv after about a month.

4Low Price Plasma Delivers
By newtonbosswell
As you can see this TV is priced to go! $699 for a 42 inch plasma? That's right. The catch? Well, It's only 720p. But don't let that stop you from buying this sweet unit. Here's the rundown: 1) Good Black Levels 2) 3:2 pull down for improved DVD playback 3) many aspect ratio settings 4) and many, many points of calibration. Simply put, the picture is awesome and you will likely spend the first 10 hours in disbelief that the picture is this good for the price. The drawbacks: 1) Not 1080P 2) No S-video Input.

5JUST BUY IT!!! Flawless Picture!!!
By pepsiguy
I bought this plasma after about 6 months of rewviews, research, and shopping. $699.99. Dont be fooled by 1080p. Your eye can't tell the difference unless you are within 5.5ft. Plasma Tv's have a faster refresh rate than LCD(even the 120hz LCD's), 100,000hr life, no burn issue anymore, and most have a better contrast. This TV is really awsome I compared it to the Samsung TOC(touch of color) series. The picture from a blu-ray player were virtually identical! This TV has many many settings that you can really tweak the color, contrast, etc. although you probably wont need them since it looks great out of the box. Sound is great as well, some reviews say different, but really is sounds great. Save you money dont believe the hype and bull about 1080p 120Hz LCD. You CAN get the same beautiful picture at a fraction of the cost.

5GREAT TV with few extras
By Joseph M. Weaver
Just got this tv and the picture quality if very good (as good as my higher end Samsung 50inch PDP). It has limited inputs and no QAM tuner, but otherwise seems to be a very nice tv without all the extras.

5Good Thing Going
By J. Chen
I purchased this set from Amazon through Crutchfield in September, 2004 (I waited as long as possible to review this item), and use it in my tv room.I'm pleased with this purchase:1. Video is superb. I watched this model at J&R (they had a running loop on a DVD player) one month before buying, and color and pixel acuity are as good as any CRT and SO MUCH better than any Plasma screens. What you'll hear and discover are that LCD black levels are much lower than plasma televisions. I am not a professional video editor, but as a graphic designer, I look for acuteness. Since I set up this LCD for a viewing distance of less than ten feet with medium-ambient lit environment, I chose acuteness over black-levels. It's on-screen selection offers DNIe (Digital Natural Image engine)--it does makes a big improvement to black-levels. I knew getting this LCD requires better cables; Time Warner Cable provides, in my opinion, low-quality cables. I got Monster cables (about $300) for component video-in. I compared these cables and the results are obvious--invest in some better cables if you spend this much on your television.2. Audio is decent. I'm not an avid audiophile, and so even at level 20, this LCD is booming. I got Monster cable (about $150) for audio as well. If I do want to view more DVDs, I may get a simple surround sound system (which I plan to get and may update this review). The fan in the LCD set emits no sounds to my untrained ears.3. DVDs look good on my two-year-old player. I am using component input. If you didn't know already, top/bottom letterboxing occurs since most movie directors choose varying anamorphic lens to shoot. I have yet to upgrade to progressive-scan DVD recorder/player later this year. So, I may again need to edit my review here.4. Beautiful metal/glass exterior looks great with my media setup, black or silver finish components. Since most places (TigerDirect) do not stock these LCDs locally, prepare to wait at least two to three weeks for delivery. The sturdy LCD set comes with just a crescent-shaped base, so get a wall-mount attachement if you like to hang it. It requires two people to unpack and mount. There is a learning-curve for the on-screen menu, but if you can navigate a DVD menu, it should not be too difficult. Cleaning is easy because it does not attract dark matter like a CRT set--no harsh chemical, just a Swiffer will do.5. Content is vital. Most people forget that this technology is still young. What you get from your cable company is about ten High Definition channels while there are hundreds of standard-definition channels. Standard low-quality signals, which show blotchy, fragments of color where digital compression takes place, look washed out. Left/right letterboxing occurs with broadcast signals since most people have televisions with a 4:3 ratio. So you just deal with it; local cable providers still have a long way to go. I find myself always switching to nature shows on Discovery HD or Public Television 13 for full screen quality. There are tons of information out on LCD versus Plasma televisions if you do internet searches or read users groups. It reminds me of VHS versus BETA. Most information appears to be marketing promotionals, so be aware. Also, proponents of both televisions will tell you why one is better than the other. The real answer comes from: how you are setting up this television (though bigger is better, your view distance is relative), what level ambient light (if it is high, then black level is more important), picture detail (which is as important as color & black levels), and price (since we can only afford so much).I hope this review helps you decide--this television is a good thing going.

4Beautiful

I was set to buy a rear-projection TV when I saw this model in a show-room. It had a near photograph quality picture, and I could not pass it up.I got Voom Satellite this week, and now I can say that the picture quality on this TV is excellent. The High-Definition stations look like photographs.

1It was superb, until disaster struck
By lansharked
I bought this Samsung LCD TV from Circuit City in December 2004 and soon upgraded my signal quality (in Massachusetts) to Adelphia HDTV Cable via a Scientific Atlanta Explorer 8300 HD (with DVR). It was a wonderful image and I hooked in every source you could imagine at the highest quality each could offer: HDTV cable via HDMI, DVD via component video, even my computer into the DVI input. As a matter of fact, I custom ordered a bookcase-like, retracting-door wooden cabinet for the TV that surrounded it like a protective shield, while the TV itself was wall-mounted with Samsung's proprietary mounting hardware.Everything was going great until last week when my three-year-old son accidentally struck the TV with a wooden block, immediately causing a multi-line hairline crack about 5 inches wide and accompanying pixel washout to the right and to the bottom of the crack, all the way to the edges of the screen. [...]I had purchased a nearly $500 extended warranty from Circuit City called the Cityadvantage Protection Plan, which the salesperson presented as just the ting to get, if I was planning to do the wall-mount installation myself (which I was), implying that it would protect the purchase in case of accidental damage.Lo and behold calls to the Cityadvantage Protection Plan support line and the CC store where I bought the TV (Burlington) revealed that the salesperson who sold me the TV no longer worked there and that accidental damage was expressly NOT covered by this 'protection plan'. Suffice it to say I will never purchase anything from Circuit City again. Other calls to Samsung and my insurance company also left me without recourse, as the possible repair/replacement of the screen "probably costs more than the TV is worth".My advice: If you have small children or anything in the neighborhood of the remotest possibility that an object could possibly strike the screen, don't buy this or any other unprotected lcd tv. I would buy it again, but would place it behind a crystal safety-glass frame over the front. You should know that the soft plastic screen is much more delicate than any conventional glass CRT or TV tube, probably something on the order of 10x less shatter-resistant. If anyone from Samsung reads this I'd like to say that I have faithfully purchased 7 durable Samsung electronics products over the last 10 years and I now feel deceived and betrayed to have been left holding the bag for what I believe is an inherently defective product with an unacceptable level of fragility. I would not be surprised if newer generations of these products include a thick glass screen cover, but not in time to rescue the brand loyalty of 'burned' early-adopters like myself.

5It's like I never watched TV before
By J. Rogers
I've had this TV for 5 days now. I've spent the majority of those days cruising around the HD Tier of my local cable company. As far as the picture goes, it is simply beautiful. I've done a massive amount of tinkering with the settings. Not because I can't find the combination that I like, but because I just felt like playing around with it and comparing the different configurations. Do yourself a favor and make sure the first thing that you do is change the mode from "Vivid" to something else. "Vivid" is the factory default and most likely set that way to boost the attraction level for the showroom.I started out by just using the calibration settings from http://www.plasmatvbuyingguide.com for the TH-50PX60U:Picture Mode StandardPicture +22Brightness +8Color -1Tint -4Sharpness -14Color Temperature WarmThese gave the picture a warmer, more realistic feel right off the bat. Skin tones were much more realistic after calibrating to these settings. The TH-50PX75U is, for all intents and purposes, the same TV as the TH-50PX60U from last year with the former having a few more features.I also decided to play around with the "Custom" mode and use the above settings as starting points. I decided to stick with the above settings for the time being as I find them most pleasing to the eye. Overall, the black levels look very good showing detail in the dark areas as well and the color is vivid. The picture looks very crisp and you get that "realism" factor that I have really only felt while researching plasmas and LCDs. Other technologies of HDTVs have not given me that "realism" feel.I've found that it is possible to notice the differences between the various cable channels and the HD that they utilize. For instance, I was watching one of the NBA Conference Finals games on TNTHD and also flipping to a baseball game being broadcast on ESPNHD. TNTHD broadcasts in 1080i while ESPNHD broadcasts in 720p. I noticed that the ESPNHD baseball game was actually a tad more crisp and vibrant than the TNTHD basketball game broadcast. However, I also noticed that the basketball game looked more crisp whenever the main camera that is used to pan the floor during the action was not used and the action cut away to another camera. I was amazed that I could see the difference between the cameras being used within the same broadcast. That being said, the game action was still more crisp than anything that I have ever seen on my old tube, non-HD set. I think that I may have been able to assist this by tinkering with the settings a bit but it was far from an issue as it still looked great. Also, while I flipped back and forth between the baseball and basketball games I also happened upon a live concert which looked even better than either the baseball or basketball game. The detail was just stunning. Also of note is the fact that you will notice that live events (sporting events, concerts) look much better in HD than a movie that is being broadcast in HD. The movies look very good and you won't be disappointed. I'm just trying to establish what to expect as a general rule.I spent some time comparing the standard definition broadcasts versus the HD broadcast of the same events. For instance, I flipped back and forth between the basketball game being broadcast on TNT between their standard definition digital signal and their HD channel. If all you've ever known is non-HD TV you will not believe that you ever had to watch an event in standard definition when you do the flip-comparison. The amount of detail that I was missing with my old TV was just incredible.I do not think that the standard definition channels are all that bad overall. Some better than others but for the most part it is slightly better than what I had been used to watching on my old TV. This, at least to me, is saying something being that this TV is 50" versus my old 27" non-HD TV. I was expecting the fuzziness of standard definition channels to be exaggerated because of being spread out over a much larger screen. I have also been using the "Just" aspect ratio when viewing standard definition channels which is like the "Full" aspect ratio except that it uses some sort of algorithm to make the center 1/3 of the picture appear without the appearance of being "stretched" and the outer 2/3 of the picture is stretched which seems to present a more normal presentation in lieu of being stretched. I am doing this simply as a precautionary measure during the first couple of hundred hours of viewing to guard against image retention (burn-in). I realize that the technology has come a long way in eliminating image retention but I would rather be cautious. There is no PIP with this unit. However, this is not an issue for me as my HD/DVR cable box has the PIP feature which works just fine for what I will use it for.I do not currently have a lot of peripherals and don't ever plan on having much more than I have now. I currently have my old DVD player (connected via component video), my XBox 360 (connected via component video) and my HD/DVR cable box (connected via HDMI). That leaves me with one more HDMI port and no more component video connections along with the composite and S-Video connections. I plan on getting an Upconverting DVD-Recorder that I will connect via the remaining HDMI connection thus freeing up one of my component video connections. Other than that I am looking into some sort of Home Theater In A Box (HTIB) that I will be connecting to the setup. I would have liked to have another HDMI connection for that purpose but I will manage. The built-in speakers are more than adequate for now and I really don't have any complaints about them. Not overwhelming but they are fine until I can get a HTIB.The pedestal stand that comes with the TV seems quite sturdy and was very simple to assemble and connect to the TV. Once on the stand the TV seems quite well balanced and it would take quite a shove for it to tip over. Panasonic also provides you with a couple of bands that you can use to screw into the TV itself and then to the stand that you place the TV on if you are not planning on wall-mounting the set to make it a little more stable. I prefer the stand/pedestal mounting personally. The TV is in a fairly well-lit room during the day and even though this particular model does not have the glare reducing shield that the next level up model has, I have not experienced any issues with glare. This was a concern for me but I have been pleasantly surprised. The black bezel/casing looks infinitely better to me than the TH-50PX60U's silver. It was a wise change by Panasonic for this year's model. The remote is simple yet very functional. I like the larger buttons and everything is easy to find. The menu system is sufficient although I still find myself exiting out of a sub-menu when I didn't want to from time to time. This is probably more a result of getting familiar with the menu system than anything else.Overall, I could not be happier with this HDTV thus far.

5Wow!
By G. Sumner
Everybody who has stepped into our new place and views this TV hanging from the wall says the same thing... "Wow!!!" The next few minutes are stunned silence as they sit down and become mesmerized by the picture. This TV has amazing colors, and is plenty bright in a brightly lit room. In fact, we had to turn the brightness down a couple of notches.I'm not a techno geek so I can't tell you how many plugs of this type or that are on the thing. I can only tell you it was more than enough for our PVR & DVD/VCR to be connected and there are many more open jacks for other stuff. We have had this TV for 2 months, trouble free and know at least 2 friends that are saving their pennies to purchase their own. Only time will tell us how good this TV really is but I can promise you once you have watched this TV for a while, you will compare all other TV's to it.p.s. For those who are wondering, a standard 4:3 TV size picture on this screen (maintain the same aspect ratio) is about 42" when measured diagonally. I was always wondering about that and figured other people might too.**** Update ****We've had this unit for 6 months with ZERO problems and the "wow factor" lives on. Watching widescreen movies & sports broadcasts on other TV's is simply not the same after having this set in our livingroom. We're now known as "TV snobs"... thanks Panasonic!!!

5One of the Best for the Money
By The Great Oz
You might find TVs with marginally better picture quality, but not in this price range. This TV has stunning styling and an even better picture. Menus are easy to navigate and setup is a cinch. I would recommend that the picture setting be changed from the factory default "Vivid" to "Standard". The Vivid setting enhances brightness and contrast. Standard setting will result in better detail and less susceptibility to burn-in, particularly in the first 200 hours of use. Plasma burn-in with quality TVs such as this is no more of a problem than burn-in with CRTs because of advancements in anti-burn-in technologies such as rotating pixels (check Panasonic's website for more detail).

5Top of the Line - Best of the Best
By R. Guentner
I have an 8-year old 50 inch bigscreen that still puts on an exceptional picture. I had found a deal on a satellite receiver that could tune the local channels in HD and connect to the bigscreen with S-Video. I had decided that I would not upgrade until I found a 60 inch or larger with a better picture. I saw this Sony on display showing Discovery HD, and had to have it. Since I got it home, I have been glued to it watching anything available in HD.

The Set: It is an LCD-projection system using a very bright lamp to project thru the LCD and onto the screen. It never needs converging. It is not affected by speakers or magnets. It has seven inputs for sources such as a DVD player, satellite receiver, etc.. Four inputs (one on the front) accept S-Video or composit video plus two channels of encoded audio. There are two inputs for RGB component sources, and one DVI input for the highest grade connection. The internal tuner will tune any broadcast tv channel, analog or digital, and offers picture with picture(side-by-side) and can adjust the size of the two pictures to maximize one and minimize the other.

The picture: It's like standing at a window and looking at the world. Simply breathtaking. There are several modes to take less-than-HD sources and fill the screen. With movies on DVD, it's better than the picture in a movie theater. and DVD players are only 480I/P sources. A 1080I source provides the best picture.

The Sound: The internal sound system provides excellent sound with several modes. The Trusurround(tm) mode will provide a very good impersonation of Dolby 5.1 surround, minus the sub-woofer. I frequently hear sounds behind me and turn to realize the home theater system is OFF, and I am listening to the TV's sound. For most people, the onboard sound will be enough. For those that want all of the theater experience, you will probably want a home theater system. I have a Sony DAV-FC9 home theater system for full enjoyment of movies.

Other: This set weighs 225lbs in it's carton. Sony recommends no less than 4 people to move it and has provided some hand-holds for that purpose. It needs a sturdy base to sit on. Sony's base is overpriced, in my opinion. I found a nice base from a home theater collection at a furniture store. It has room for DVD recorders, satellite receivers, or the home theater receiver. The screen protector is a solid sheet of tempered glass about 3 inches larger than the screen. It makes the set a bit front heavy. Read the manual for more info (www.docs.sony.com/release/KDF70XBR950.pdf). The glass has a front-surface anti-glare coating to cut down on reflections. It should not be touched, except for gentle cleaning. If you are watching a dark program(outside scene at night) you may still get some reflections from light room objects, but not overwhelming.

To Sum it Up: I am very happy with this HDTV receiver. I still have not found a better picture on anything bigger than 60 inches. I apparently am not the only fan. I had to order it from a local store by placing a 20% deposit and wait for the next shipment. My one complaint, if that, is that with this sharp of a picture, you can see the flaws in lesser programming.

1Sony does not stand behind this product
By Paul A. Henry
I speny just under 8,000 USD for my KDF70XBR950 in August 05 and it recently started showing a blue squiggely line in the center - bottom of the tv. I had a repair tech come out and he told it had a bad optical assy and that I should contact Sony as there was a known issue with this part. I contacted Sony and they claim that while there is a known issue that "my particular issue" wasn't the specific issue covered by the extended warranty. Bottom line is they want $1,400 to repair it. So I am stuck with a peice of junk KDF70XBR950 that I paid more for then my car and Sony refuese to stand behind it. Buyers beware - Sony does not stand behind their products. I can buy a new 73 inch Mitsubschi for $3500 so why pay for the $1400 repair for a product that will just fail again....There will never be another Sony product in my household!

5Still the best I've seen at this size
By David C. Everett
I have had this TV for two years now. No buyer's remorse what-so-ever. I still have not seen a better TV at this size, and I have looked at DLP, LCD-RP, LCD-directview, plasma, CRT, and also front projection. Five of my friends have gone out and bought this TV (or the 60-inch version) after seeing it in action at my house. I cannot say enough about how stunning the picture quality is.The 60-inch version of this TV now uses LCoS instead of LCD, and I think it has higher resolution, so I may wish to upgrade if they ever come out with the 70-incher in LCoS.I have heard two complaints about this TV in the HD forums. One of which is completely bogus. The other may be a concern.1) The big sheet of plexiglass in front of the screen causes too much glare. This is the bogus complaint. If they had put a lenticular screen in front to cut down on glare, you would lose both brightness and viewing angle. Give me the ultra-bright, super-sharp, wide-angle-viewable screen any day and I'll do whatever else can be done to cut down on the glare.2) The contrast drops off sharply at dark grey. Yes, LCDs have contrast problems below a certain brightness level. You will definitely see a sharp drop off in detail in darker areas of the screen when watching this TV. It is inherent to LCD. No way around it. In my opinion, there are at least as many drawbacks to the other technologies (DLP, Plasma, CRT).Go get one of these before they are all gone!

5Easily the best TV of 2007 for the price
By J. D. Robinson
Moving to a new house and am buying two new flat panels for living room and bedroom. I had assumed that LCD was the best technology currently available, but after a lot of careful research, found out about the new Samsung Plasmas, the 54/64 series in 50" or 42" sizes.WOW! This is an amazing set. I am very picky about what I buy, but at the same time try to spread my $ around so that I can have decent components for everything. This TV is in the sweet spot for bang for the buck. I thought that I would really be missing out by not having a 1080p TV, but this thing is truly amazing.I am running an HD Tivo from DirecTV (HDMI), an Xbox 360 (component), PS3 (component) and Wii (component). They are all amazing, and for the money I saved on not getting 1080p or LCD, I am able to get a 4254 for the bedroom. The two main differences between this unit (5064) and the other model (5054) is that this one has a slightly stronger anti-glare shield and can view photos off of a USB stick. If you have a 360, you won't likely use this functionality anyway. The stronger anti-glare shield is great if you are putting this in a bright room with lots of windows, but if there is not going to be glare on the tv, go with the 54 series because the glass is clearer due to less heavy glare shield. I will say that the glare shield is really great - my old rear projection Sony reflected every light in the room, this plasma doesn't reflect anything even with every light in the room on.The fit and finish is top notch, plenty of inputs including 3 HDMI and a PC input. Take care to break your plasma in properly, don't watch too much SD tv with black bars during the first couple hundred hours, at least stretch the picture. This TV is best suited for HD input, it looks fine on Standard Def, but that is not what it was designed for.If you are in the market for a TV, and your price point is in the "just below $2000" and you want a 50" this is your TV. Smaller size/price point? Go with the 4254 or 4264 from Samsung. You won't regret it.- Update (2/14/2008): with the price hovering just over the $1,000 mark, this thing is an even better buy. 8 months later and no complaints. -Josh- Update (2/8/2011): Power supply blew. TV was still chugging along until that happened. The good news is that I found the power supply from an online parts shop for $70 and instructions from a forum and downloaded the tv service manual in PDF form so plan to fix it myself. Paying Samsung certified tech to do it would be about $400, not worth it for a 4 year old TV.

5My Thoughts on the HPT-5064
By J. Carter
The HPT-5064 is one of CNET's top 5 rated plasma HDTVs as of this writing (9/13/07), and with good reason. This TV has all the major features at the right price point in today's market, making it a strong contender on your shopping list. I shopped every LCD, DLP and Plasma in this price range, and the HPT-5064 emerged time and time again as the #1 choice.Let's get something out of the way first - you're probably going back and forth between 1080p and 720p TVs, trying to figure out if 1080p is worth the premium. Quick calculation - at this size (50"), you're supposed to be sitting at least 10 ft. back. At that distance, your eyes won't be able to tell the difference between 720p and 1080p. So, my advice - buy this TV. If you can't sit at least 8-10" back, if you've got the patience of a monk and are willing to wait for 1080p prices to fall to 720p prices, or if you're one of those people who never buy anything for fear that there's something "better" out there, go for 1080p. Then again, you may get hit by a truck tomorrow, and 1080p isn't going to do you much good then, is it? Your headstone will say:While He Was Waiting For 1080pGot Hit By A Semi Going 73Like something out of Disney's Haunted Mansion. You know what I'm talking about. Also replace "He" with "She" if you are a girl. I would have put "He/She", but that's a strange construct with all kids of linguistic baggage that I avoided in the name of brevity...even wit, if you could call it that. The best advice for technology is, "Don't buy the hottest thing - buy yesterday's hottest thing". Why? Because technological upgrades aren't exponential, they're incremental. You're paying for a lot more than you're getting at the time. Meanwhile, prices on yesterday's hot thing are dropping faster than the housing market. Look at Apple. You buy something, and as the UPS guy is ringing your doorbell, they cut the price in half and release a new model. Apple's cool, though.Enough philosophy. Here's what I love about this HDTV:* Fantastic, natural-looking picture with no macroblocking, ghosting or blurring. Coming off a 32" LCD that suffered from all those problems, I'm very happy. Colors are perfect. Blacks are black (not CRT black, but CRTs aren't 3" deep either). Contrast is amazing. Feed this thing high-quality off-air HD channels, your Xbox 360 or PS3, HD-DVDs or Blu-Ray, or 480p DVDs, and you'll be impressed. Standard def, as expected, looks like standard def stretched out over a 50" screen. If that's your thing, go for it, but I don't suggest it. This thing thrives on a diet of steady HD content. Go to your parent's house if you want to watch...I dunno. I was going to say Sesame Street or Antiques Roadshow, but even public television comes in HD now, and your parents probably have an HDTV, so my joke has no punchline. Go to your parent's house anyway, your mom misses you and will probably make you a sandwich.* 3 individual picture adjustments for each input with three modes - Dynamic, Standard and Movie. Dynamic (also known as "torch" mode or "store" mode) will make your eyes bleed, just don't do it. Standard is great for brightly lit daytime viewing (though tends toward the blue spectrum), while Movie features the greatest amount of adjustable values, and fits the bill as the default setting for discriminating viewers (see CNET's website for settings that are just about perfect). Any adjustments you make to the three modes are kept in memory for each input. It's a tweaker's dream. Just don't drive your significant other crazy trying to determine if "48" or "49" is the best color value. (P.S. - it's 48...or is it?)* Burn-in protection. Go ahead, admit it. You're worried about burn in. You've read the reviews that say that burn-in is overrated, but then, right there on the forum, man, is a dude who took a picture of his brand new plasma with the CNN logo permanently etched in. If you're worried, Samsung threw in a few modes that can help you prevent and erase burn-in. I take the whole burn-in issue with a grain of salt, from both sides. Just like with your old CRT, you shouldn't display any still images for an excessive amount of time (multiple hours), but watching a letter-boxed movie one night isn't going to ruin your television. Just use common sense and don't leave Bioshock or your TiVo on pause for 6 hours with the TV on. And run the modes every so often, it can't hurt.* Style - this TV looks better than its step-down model, the HPT-5054. The speakers are hidden beneath a thin bezel on the bottom of the set. It's also glossy. I'm not a glossy fan, but good luck trying to find a 50" plasma that isn't glossy. It's like trying to find a bathroom when you really have to use the bathroom. In other words, it's hard to find. Maybe I didn't look that hard. I guess if you really have to go, it doesn't matter if you find one or not. A bathroom, that is. It's also got the anti-glare screen and the USB port for showing pictures and what not. The TV, that is. I don't know of any bathroom that has a USB port, but hey. They're putting USB ports in just about everything nowadays, so who knows. Maybe I just gave somebody an idea. Which I won't get credit for. Again.* Viewing angle - you can walk right to the edge of the bezel and this TV gives a perfect picture with no washout.Other random advice: If you've got the room, go for this or a bigger set. Never settle for smaller when it comes to HDTVs. If you've never had a big set before, you'll get this thing home and say, "Dear God, what have I done?" like a mad scientist who has just seen his monstrous creation come to life. However, after a few days, you will acclimate to the size, and may even say to yourself, "I could have gone a little bigger." Then, one night, you will watch your old TV and say, "You are puny, and insignificant." And maybe you will make-believe that you are crushing your old TV between your thumb and forefinger with one eye closed, because it is really that small that it can be crushed in such a manner. Don't worry, your old TV doesn't have feelings. But you do. And you are sad that you paid almost half of what you paid for the new TV for the old TV. So you stop crushing it. And maybe you pout your lip a little. Maybe not. I'm just saying get the bigger TV, that's all, try not to read too much into it.

5Highly recommended
By Steve
I shopped endlessly for an HDTV at all of the retail stores, and I was pretty much set on Samsung for quality and price. I finally decided on the 50 inch 5064 and I am so glad I did. It looks beautiful, just mesmerizing. My signal is from Verizon FIOS for the HD with an HD-DVR through HDMI connections. The order was filled within one week and the delivery company called me to arrange a time the next day. They arrived on time, unboxed the unit, moved my old 36 inch CRT (240 pounds) and set up the new plasma TV, all in about 10 minutes. The crew was very friendly and professional. All in all I saved money and had a very pleasant purchase experience. The only problem is that I can't stop watching it! It's great!
