1You'll be sorry
By T. Coll
I own a HP 42 inch plasma that recently lost its picure. If you search you'll find this is a common problem with the HP's. When it worked it was fine. It had good resolution and color. It also had the usual burn in issues on the sides from commercials.I had this TV in a apartment that I only used on weekends and it died in 20 months. That equates to 6 months of normal viewing. I will not purchase another HP.

1Buyer Beware
By J.M.Dee
I've had a HP 42 inch Plasma TV for 3 years and it has been a wonderful picture with vibrant colors but a few weeks ago the picture faded and started flickering and no amount of adjusting would fix it.That is when the problems began, it was impossible to find a HP authorized repair service anywhere in my area in Northern California . No other repair service would touch it citing that HP would not sell the parts or give them any repair manuals.I called HP for help and got someone from India who was very polite but almost impossible to understand. I was told that for $685 a technician would be sent to my house and then parts would be ordered and the TV fixed. The TV would only be warrantied for 90 days.I told him that for $685 I could go to Costco and buy another Plasma TV, which I did that same day so be aware that even though I think the HP is a cut above the others in quality one day sooner or later it will bite the dust and then your problems will begin.Needless to say I am extremely disappointed with HP, I have bought and used lots of their products over the years, even now I have a HP scanner and printer but it's the end of line for HP, I will never buy another one of their products.

3HP PL4272N
By C. Bridgen
This is an excellent TV for someone looking for an HD picture at a good price. This TV was ahead of its time coming out of the box with 3 HDMI inputs, 2 component inputs, a PC input, 2 composite video inputs, and 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio. Its maximum resolution is 1080i, so it is unable to see the best 1080P high definition picture, but shows an excellent HD picture. I have owned my TV for a year and a half now and it has been excellent. I play video games on it, use it as a PC monitor and watch tons of movies and regular TV programs. The HD cable picture is excellent. As for the burn-in. Red is the hottest color in your TV and plasma TV's in general are WAY more susceptible to burn-in, especially the color red. People don't realize that surge protection is one of the most important keys to protecting your new HD television. If you're worried about your TV lasting...Calibration, the fine tuning of your picture settings through the service menu, will help to add on to the quality of your picture, the life of your TV, and the overall performance and efficiency of the unit. PUT A SURGE PROTECTOR ON YOUR TV IF YOU WANT IT TO LAST!!!

41st Review of Curtis LCD4299A - Great Bargin in a 3D HDTV
By Deano
Can't touch 42 inch 1080p 3D at this price! Found it on new years for $450. But with no reviews that were out there on it, it's a risk to buy sight unseen. But not really once you have. I thought some of you might be out there looking for someone who had something, anything to say about this specific product.Curtis is a little known mfr, but their other sets get good reviews where it counts for 3D, in the display. (OBTW, they're NOT the phoenix of Curtis Mathes, an exceptionally high quality mfr that went under in the eighties). You'll want to read DisplayMate's 3D shootout review on Passive 3D superiority to the earlier (and still market dominant) Active 3D. [...]Bought a refurbished Samsung BDC5500 3D player on the same order (yes, it is a pattern you're seeing here). Hooked up both & was watching 3D blu-ray in under an hour last nite for only $530 combined.PROs: Price, bright clear display, price, 1080p 3D, price, 42in, price, 3D glasses same as Theaters (wink wink)CONs: So-So audio, Stand can't pivot, cheap Remote (I know cheap), And no good BDC5500 remote code for Curtis TVs, "35" gets ON-OFF control only. Lastly (from my brief experience) the enormous 16" x 23.5" bracket spacing rules out many adjustable wall mounts. I'll have to fab my own.I've obviously only barely tapped into this TV's feature set, but it did just fine scanning my broadcast TV channels (don't need cable just to watch news), and the HDTV stations I flipped thru come in looking just fine. And yes, as you probably guessed I use bottom-feeder $15/mo DSL (at least I'm not dial-up) so I can't tell you how it does on internet streaming.Other disclaimers - Never saw a Curtis TV before unboxing mine, so I can't give you a fully informed account of side-by-side viewing competition on a retailer's sales floor. But I'm a Samsung fanboy when it comes to displays (there, I said it) with 4 of their monitors (up to 27") gracing various computers in my house. And nothing with this Curtis HDTV's screen disappoints.Oh, ignore the occasional claim you may run across that 3D Blu-Ray players are either `Active' or `Passive' and must be matched to an HDTV of the same technology. That's bunk. This Passive 3D HDTV works just fine with my Samsung player whose MFR is leading the Active 3D camp. Google it if you still feel hesitant. Now let's be realistic on viewing expectations. Breathtaking movie theater 3D awesomeness you ain't gonna get (at least if like me you sit close to the front). At this screen size it's like viewing a 3D scene through a wide window. But it IS bright & clear 3D, has visual depth, and gives just that much more of an immersive experience over just your basic Blu-Ray.And did I mention price?!? For the cost of normal 1080p HiDef, you're getting great 3D for free!UPDATE 2/14/12 - Good news. The Logitech Harmony 300i Universal Remote Control works with this TV. You can find a refurbished model for $17 bucks online. Since the programming codes for each individual device are downloaded from Logitech's website, I'd wager any of their universal remote control models will do the trick. This overcomes the most major of my concerns. I did find a wall mount large enough to fit the super-wide bracket holes. It's extra-heavy duty made for TVs up to 65" and weighing 4 times as much, costing double what should otherwise be necessary for a 42" TV. But I'll never have to worry about an earthquake shaking it off it's brackets.Paired with a better remote, I'll up my rating for this TV to 4.5 stars. The built-in audio is still sub-par compared to the other strengths of this TV, but if you're playing the audio through a decent sound system, there's no reason not to have this TV as the centerpiece of a modest home theater system.

5Does everything you could possibly expect for the price
By Auroran
I bought this TV from Amazon, but with a price match to CompUSA. It arrived last week, and so far, it works perfectly--as well as I could possibly expect for the under-$500 price I paid. The passive 3D technology (using lightweight polarized glasses) is generally both impressive and unobtrusive.a) The one true 3D Blu-Ray movie I have watched so far is Disney's Christmas Carol. 3D effects were impressive but not eye-popping. However, I think that was Disney's deliberate intention--to avoid exaggerated 3D effects that might nauseate children and give adults headaches over an hour-and-a-half span.b) 3D (side-by-side) YouTube videos (streamed from the Internet to my Panasonic BDT215P Blu-Ray player) look good. The TV automatically recognizes side-by-side video and displays it in 3D.c) 3D photos and videos on my HTC Evo 3D phone play reasonably well, in 3D, on the TV via a simple MHL adapter. The quality is lower because the pixel resolution is that of the phone's own screen (960x540) rather than the source (1920x1080 photo, 1280x720 video).d) 3D photos and videos from my Evo 3D play better when transferred to a USB stick and plugged into the Panasonic Blu-Ray player. The Panasonic sends side-by-side to the TV, which (again, very conveniently) automatically interprets it as 3D. The only glitch in this procedure is that 3D videos must be remuxed into the .mkv format by a tool such as mkvmerge (and with the obscure option Disable Header Compression enabled).e) The TV offers 2D-to-3D conversion for anything it displays, from DVDs to broadcast television. This added-3D effect is generally rather minor, but I will probably use it when I can.In buying this low-priced 3D TV, I consciously made a few tradeoffs:- I didn't need LED backlighting. The primary advantage of LED backlighting is to make the TV lighter and thinner. This might have been nice, but I was not willing to pay considerably extra for it.- I didn't need any Internet capability in the TV itself. My Panasonic BDT215P player has all the Internet capability I need right now; and as the technology progresses, I can eventually replace a small $130 player much more easily than a large $480 TV.- I didn't need a name brand. I figure that passive 3D technology (for 42" TVs) is probably manufactured in only a couple places on earth right now, so I suspect that my TV was built in the same place that produces Vizio or LG 3D TVs. Interestingly, RCA Televisions Canada sells this same LCD4299A as their own, although I could easily believe that Curtis simply bought the RCA name in Canada. (I don't think there is a "real" RCA anymore, just a virtual brand.)

4Excellent by my eyes
By Campin' Cowpoke
This is my first bigscreen, and first hdtv. Previous set was a 36" Toshiba CRT.I've been sitting on the sideline for 3 or 4 years waiting for prices to drop, and the technology to stabilize. I was sold on dlp, but the color wheel reliability and rainbow problems finally pushed me toward lcd (50" hd plasma was out of my price range). So, I anxiously awaited the arrival of these Sony sets at the brick and mortar stores. These are the first Sony sets I would consider, since they finally decided not to waste the width of the tv on speakers. The hidden speaker design on these sets is brilliant! Neither the height or the width of this set is very impacted by the speakers, which makes this set WAY more comapct than most sets out there. So, what's the picture quality? Well, after seeing a couple of these sets in person, I was initially very dissappointed. Bad screen door (black lines between pixels) and a very underwhelming picutre. Then, I finally came across one that had a high quality HD feed, and was blown away. Very sharp and colorful (though with red push). So I pulled the trigger and brought it home that day. When I got it unpacked and set up I did a channel scan and immediately was blown away by the picture quality of 1080i HD on TNT. I watched "Fellowship of the Ring" that night with my jaw on the floor. I am officially addicted to HD! Standard definition is more than acceptable though, and dvd's look great even being upconverted from 480i over component cables. I did not find any stuck pixels or other defects, though I did see one floor model with a block of 3-5 pixels that were stuck. It was not noticeable past 6-8 feet though. My viewing area has some seating on the sides, with the worst being around 45 degrees off center. The viewing angle on this set is excellent, and the brightness even that far off center is practically the same as straight on.The highly anticipated feature on this set is the Automatic Iris control which throttles back the light depending on the overall brightness of the scene being displayed. In theory, this allows the tv to produce deeper blacks on dark scenes. Personally I don't think it does a whole lot to automatically improve the PQ, but I like the adjustability that it provides from the menu. I crank the iris open during day viewing, since I have a lot of windows in my room. At night I cut it back to minimum and the black levels are much improved.HITS- Great Picture!- Compact dimensions, and light weight- Great upconversion of 480i dvd and standard def tv.MISSES- Sony deleted their excellent Twinveiw PIP for these models- Only one HDMI input- Does not convert all audio to the optical digital output like the Mitsubishi LCD RPTVs do.I will not be using this set for gaming, so I can't comment on that aspect. Why 4 stars? I think it was very cheesy of Sony to delete PIP on a $2k+ tv!Update:Sports broadcast in 720p are absolutely amazing on this set. I got pulled into watching a Nascar race just because the picture was so incredible.12/7/05 Update: I continue to be amazed by this tv. I saw it side by side with the new Sony 50" sxrd set at Sears, and while the sxrd definitely was a slightly better picture, it isn't worth practically 2X the price. Especially in your home, you won't have the 2 sets to compare to each other. I've been over to friends' houses who have hd projection crt, and it just doesn't compare. I'm still sold.I do have 2-3 stuck pixels that have shown up, and they are all green. The ONLY time you can see them is on a completely black screen (an unused input works), when you're standing less than about 3 feet from the screen, and when you know exactly where to look. You'd have to be the most @nal person on the planet to get annoyed by them.

5Great HDTV
By R. Stone
I have satellite and a progressive DVD connected my new Sony. DVD's look great. It's like being being at the movie theater. The sound is very good. Satellite standard definition is upconverted by the TV. The standard signal picture is good but not as good as my Sony tube TV. This TV is great for HD signals and DVD and is acceptable for standard definition. If you watch mostly standard definition TV I'd get the 42 inch. If you watch DVD's and HDTV then this is the best set for the money right now. The picture and colors are very bright out of the box but has three picture settings that can be customized. The Wide modes for standard TV work well especially the Wide Zoom. Standard TV is very watchable but don't expect a crystal clear picture. HDTV is as good as the more expesive plasma TVs. The TV is very light and can be easily moved. The menu is very useable and you can adjust each input's settings and they are memorized. Overall this is a great TV. Probably the best projection HDTV for viewing standard TV signals and HD and DVD. I spent weeks looking at all of them.

5Don't trust out-of-the-box impression
By Joel Hollier
This television was well worth the money. Even though it is an entry level, it was plenty for my viewing space. After purchasing, I used the Avia configuration disk to tune the picture and am nothing but impressed. Out-of-the-box the picture was dissappointing; a little too much red push, too much contrast, too much brightnes, and way too much sharpness - this basically made the picture too washed out with too "hard" of edges. After configuring though, it is phenomenal! The detail is superb for DVD and HD. Even standard cable channels are on the plus side of acceptable. Make sure to use the composite video or HDMI, though. I found the TV through consumer reports, and after researching and reading reviews decided it would be the one for me. Consumer reports ranked it #2 for its class, I trust the Sony name, and most buyers said the problems they were having could be "tuned" out. I'm glad I picked it, and would buy it again. Superb product!

5Phenomenal TV for under $1,000
By Lusayalumino
Review Westinghouse SK-32H240S 32" LCD HDTV HDMI PIPGreat job Westinghouse! Excellent picture for a 720 (1080s are better but much more$$).Has 2 HDM inputs!! DO NOT buy a TV with fewer than two HDMI inputs. Later you will inevitably end up with at least a DVD & Satellite if not other HDMI devices. One great feature is that one of the HDMI inputs has a separate analog audio input. Normally, the HDMI carries its own audio, but if you run a Dolby 5.1 amp with center channel, you can run the center channel directly to the TV as your center channel with the HDMI analog audio input!! The TV has excellent speakers with great Bass & Treble controls and two 10watt amps. All the cords run down the sides of the back of the TV so they do not get smashed against the wall. This means you can purchase a $20 HDMI cable from Belkin @ WalMart instead of an $80 HDMI MonsterCable at BestBuy. Furthermore, the side access makes it easy to access your hookups while the TV is against the wall. The TV does have PIP (Picture in Picture) which is not always present on entry level HD TVs. Unfortunately, it seems that only the VGA (PC input) works as a second source for PIP. By the way, the VGA looks phenomenal with your PC. Run the VGA at 1280x768 or whatever has closest proportions to 16:9. I hookup my notebook computer and let my digital pictures play on the TV on my wall... just gorgeous. Also, work on your PC while using a small PIP window to watch TV (but you will not be able to use the HDMI in PIP so will need to use alternate inputs on the TV to accomplish this). This TV has a Great remote control to boot.In summary: Compared to other TVs in the same price range:1) Better Picture2) More inputs/outputs3) More features4) Better remoteEXCELLENT PURCHASE!!

1Worked great..but then something happened
By Joe C.
I purchased this TV from a big box retailer in July of 2007. I chose this one after looking at the picture and color compared with the others in the store and I was very impressed. It worked get for the first six months. Easy to set up and to use with all my different components (dvd, vcr, sound system, cablebox). However, six months later, I have been having some horrible problems with it. It scrambles and has some horrible color problems (whites are showing up pink and blown out details). I started calling Westinghouse after the first of the year and got the run around. I had the cable company out to check the signal, switched out 2 cable boxes, and did the factory reset a couple of hundred times. It took calling every week for a month to get them working on this. Finally, I was able to get them to send me a box and now its been sitting with them to make whatever decision they are going to make.Although this may have been a rare problem with my particular tv, I feel the way in which it was being dealt with was inexcusable. If a product has a warranty, it should be dealt with in a swift manner. This is a lot of money to be messing with. I would look elsewhere for a better company who respects their customers.

5Beautiful TV!
By Tyler V. Snow
My wife and I could not be more pleased with this TV. The picture is simply beautiful, whether you're viewing something in HD or not. When we were picking it out, we compared this TV with other models with the same size, and our choice was obvious. Everything priced above this model was priced WAY above it, because those models were the top brands like Sony and Sharp. Everything priced similarly to this model, or below, had clearly lower picture quality. We have used this TV for over a month and have experienced no problems whatever. The "overfill" mode for non-HD TV stations works great, and the sound quality is what you would expect for built-in TV speakers. I honestly have no complaints about this TV!If you don't want to fork over the money for the top brands but want a high-quality TV whose picture looks pretty much the same as the top brands, you should give this Westinghouse TV some serious thought.
