5This is a great TV
By Bob Boberson
I got this TV because I got a great deal on it. It was not in my list of choices due to the fact that it was more expensive than my budget. Thankfully the other two sets I was looking at were not in stock, and ultimatly I was offered this model for 1,501. I have wanted a flat panel since they were 10-16k. I have followed trends and prices every since. When my 10yo tube died, and it came time to buy I figured it was time for a flat panel. My suggestion to people when shopping is to go look at the TV and PLAY WITH IT. Try different settings. If the salesperson gives you [...] then go somewhere else. Do NOT rely on people like Consumer Reports, or other review types. People precieve color different than others. What looks good to one may not look as good to another. For me the Hitachi is simply the best to my eyes. The connections they give are great. The remote is nice, however unlike others I don't revolve my life around a remote. Yes I have acctually seen people bag a TV because of the remote. If you read the features of this TV then compare with what is considered to be the best, or TV's in the same price range you will find the Hictachi is feature rich. The only thing I would like to see from these Manufacturers is built in DVR. As small as large capacity storage is getting this could be done, and we could all loose one box from our systems. This TV has an in depth color setup, and 3 levels of black enhancement. It also sports three HDMI connections (two in back one one the side). The upper level menu functions are available from the TV panel such as changing the channel, and menu functions. There are 3 screen savers (user selectible) to be used to help with IR. The TV is cable card ready so if your provider has this say goodbuy to the 'ol cable box. In my area if I use the cable card I save $13 a month buy getting rid of the box as the card is only $1.50 a month. You still get all of the HD and programming just without the box. The overall picture is great on this TV. HD is nothing less than awesome. SD is great on some, not so great on other channels. The not so great I blame on systems outside my TV. I had to call support because I broke my remote the second day I had the TV. After going through some steps with the support tech we found the remote was bad. They sent one to me 2nd day air no charge, no questions. THAT is service....oh did I mention I spent more time getting through the automated menu on the phone then did waiting for a tech to answer? Not that the automated menu was long, they were just THAT fast getting me connected to a live AMERICAN ENGLISH SPEAKING person....did you hear that DELL, HP, and etc.....go buy this TV.

5Better than our Panasonic or Sony- especially movies!!!
By J. Adams
We have had the Hitachi for a little over a month. Our two other HDTVs are a 42" Sony LCD rear-projection and a Panasonic 32" LCD which we have owned (and loved!) for 14 months and a year respectively. For sports, it is a very close match between the three - I may prefer the Panasonic just a smidge but it is in a very small (and darker!) room. For broadcast TV we like all three but this one (the Hitachi) wins for reasons of flexibility and a far superior remote (imho). A lower model (the 69) was rated highly in, well, you know, but below the Pani but this model has a 16 bit processor (and picture was roughly equal with the reviewed 12 bit) and thus a superior picture and features. The case we found to be far superior for viewing purposes. We couldn't find an angle, for example, to view the Pani where glare wasn't obvious- on this one we have to TRY to find any glare. Our kicthen/dining area is directly behind us and has the brightest lights and 3 large windows. We don't see much if any glare even on sunny days (we have the set tilted down about 10-degrees from vertical on a wall mount and that helps). But the real selling point is the adjustability of the picture/color and how this set performs on movies. I teach film classes at least a few times per year at our college and I watch a LOT of movies (tough job but . . .). :) The subtlety and superiority of the picture on dvd, up-converted dvd, or HD-DVD are all very obvious (two pair of 52 and 60 year old eyes agree with this assessment). HDTV is also superior though HDTV looks so good, relatively speaking, that it is harder to tell under our viewing conditions and with present conditions (DirectTV and off-sat reception). It also doesn't seem to get nearly as hot as some reports and I've had no problem what-so-ever with "odd" greens as reported on a few blog sites. Having so much experience with LCDs before it did take our eyes a few days to adjust to the greater and more subtle detail of a plasma but it has been well worth the adjustment! (Our set is professionally adjusted but I found the same things to be true with my own educated guesses before adjustment!).

2Disposable electronics
By M. Carter
We enjoyed this TV while it worked. We purchased it in January 08, had to have a service tech come fix it right away and then had to wait for Hitachi to send a firmware upgrade before we could use it. Two years later, it plays for a minute then shuts off. Hitachi sent another firmware upgrade, but the power won't stay on long enough to do it. Now we have to pay for someone to come tell us whether it's worth fixing or just scrap it because it's not worth fixing. Too bad. I won't be buying another Hitachi, I would suggest the Sony Bravia which we've been much happier with the picture quality anyway. Customer service at Hitachi acts like they get calls about this all the time. Seemed to know what the problem was but didn't tell me.

5Above and beyond expectations
By Jody Batik
It was time to upgrade to a new TV after moving to a new house. After seeing several of the new plasma TV's at the local electronic stores I decided that was the route for me. After doing weeks worth of research I was set to go with the Panasonic 42px500u. The unit had all of the specs that I wanted: 42", cablecard, TV Guide, VGA input, PIP and media card slots. Then I read about the new Toshiba Plasmas that were coming out in August/September. The Toshiba 42hp95 pretty much had the same specs as the Panasonic except for the name.I went to a local electronics store that had the TV and watched it side by side with the Panasonic 42px50u. Both had clear black levels and an unbelievable picture. Not finding the 500u in a retail store, I went with the Toshiba. I have not regretted it at all.First what you should expect: bright clear picture. HD of course looks incredible. I do have digial cable and the digital channels look extremely well but surprisingly the SD channels look great! Setup was easy and within 10 minutes of hooking up the audio/video cables I was watching HD football.Probably the biggest surprise with this TV is the quality of the built in speakers. The speakers create a pseudo-theater sound that I was not expecting.Bottom line is that this TV is great. Toshiba obviously spent the time to come out with a quality set that should be recognized with the plasma kings Panasonic and Pioneer.

1Guess I got the LEMON
By Janis Smith
I purchased this Toshiba 42HP95 in Jan 06. I have had constant picture problems, flickering and rolling, most recently it goes to a black screen. Toshiba has been little help. I have now had 3 TV repair guys see it. One installed an update that made it worse. Now my gorgeous when it works plasma tv is in the shop, unfortunately they didn't take my 3000.00 credit card bill with it. Today is 5/22 they said they would get around to looking at it on 5/29, good luck, that's a holiday.I wouldn't recommend this to my worst enemy.Well here's an update 7/3/06. After filing a BBB and FTC complaint, Toshiba finally replaced my defective TV,( after 4.5 weeks in the shop) with the newer model 42HP66. There are a few differences. The 66 doesn't let you change the screen size, without loosing quality, or giving you the full 42" on non HD channels/broadcasts. Possibly one of the reasons the 95 model kept crapping out on me. The built-in channel guide is also missing (not really needed,, since the cable co provides one)Seems the bad ones were purchased at SEARS. Most other reviews loved this 95 model, those purchased at SEARS weren't so lucky.Crossing my fingers this one gives me years of good service.Way to go Toshiba for finally stepping up to the plate and replacing my set. No thanks to the guy on the phone line named JOHN!!!!

5Worth paying more for the 500U than the 50U
By Chitta R. Baral
This model (Panasonic TH-42PX500U) is a lot more expensive than the Panasonic TH-42PX50U. The difference in prices in amazon for both items is a bit too much. This model is not available in most chain stores (Cicuit city, best buy etc.). A local store had both models and I could buy this model for a couple of hundred dollars more. I think for $200 more it is worth it, as it has the following advantage over the 50U.1. 500 U has 6 speakers (2 bass-reflex woofers: 6 ohms, 120Hz-2Khz, 10%THD) (4 tweeters: 8 ohms, 500Hz-15Khz,10%THD) 26 W power. VS50 U has 2 (16W, 6 ohms, 105Hz-20KHz 10%THD)2. 500 U has BBE ViVA HD3D sound.3. 500 U has a photoviewer (SD and PC card slots).4. 500U has Sd card slot5. 500 U has 2 rear and 1 front composite video input vs 50 U has only 2 rear ones.6. 500 U has 2 rear and 1 front S-video input vs 50 U has only 2 rear ones.7. 500 U has 2 rear and 1 front audio input (for video) vs 50 U has only 2 rear ones.8. 500 U has PC input (RGB-VGA) i.e., mini D-sub 15-pin (rear)9. 500 U has a audio input for PC (M3 stereo plug)10. 500 U has a TV guide on-screen program guide.11. 500 U has Picture-in-picture (split screen display -- 2 sources)12. 500 U power consumpition is listed at 357 W and for 50U it is listed at 399W.13. 500U dimensions: 28.7" X 44.&" X 5.4" 50U dimensions 27 39/64" X 42 3/64" X 3 51/64"14. 500 U is 88.2 lbs; 50 U is 76.06 lbs.15. The stand for 500U has a swivel but not in 50 USo far i am very happy with my 500 U. My only wish was that it had two seprate inputs for cable and over the air programming.

5Beautiful picture!
By T. Huynh
Panasonic has proven again that they do make one of the best plasma TV out there. My TH-42PX500U arrived from Amazon is one perfect shape. Setup was super easy. The beauty of this plasma is viewing the HD channels...the quality is unbelievable.Yes, I did my extensive research before making my purchase.I researched LCDs and DLP LCDs (rear projection) as well as other plasmas.Pioneer PDP-4350 and Sony plasmas were considered until I compared the picture quality side to side at the store.Bottom line: the picture quality of Panasonic 42PX500U is equal or better in most cases. My only complaint: the TV only has one input feed for RF antenna. I would prefer two (as Sony and Pioneer do have) input feeds where I can connect an DHTV antenna and as well as cable antenna.Other than that, it's worth the keep!

5Beautiful picture
By Quoad Toad
This is a great tv. The picture quality is supurb. The images from HD programs are especially impressive. I've had this tv for 2 months now and have no complaints.Features that set this tv apart from others:-PCMCIA slot - with a PCMCIA adapter you can use almost any camera memory card to view photos on your tv.-Even standard definition channels look great on this tv. I know some people have had complaints that standard definition doesn't look as good as on a normal tv, but for wide aspect tv's, this one has great images in standard definition.-Nice sound/invisible speakers - You can hardly tell that this tv has built in speakers. The tv itself is black and the speakers blend in perfectly. I used the tv speakers for a month before getting a new receiver and they worked great.I researched pasma tv's for a couple months before selecting this model. The price is great (purchased for around $2,700) and the picture quality is excellent.

5It Doesn't Look Real
By S. Hill
When my friend asked me to come over to see his "amazing new tv" all I could think about is what will I say when I see no difference from my own. I couldn't have been more shocked when he turned it on. JVC has done an incredible job with this set. The picture clarity and color is so realistic it almost appears 3D; people seem to be standing in front of you rather than on a screen. It is challenging to describe so if you have the option to see this product live, you will understand immediately how radically different it is. Additionally, the sound system is superb for a 32" television. My friend disconnected his external surround-sound system so that I could hear the JVC audio bar and I think it sounded better. I am extremely impressed by this product and will likely replace my Sharp, which is only two years old, but the JVC quality really is that much better.

5The reviews were right
By John
I'm a little OCD when it comes to buying anything over $50, so I did a lot research before I bought my 32" JVC flat screen. It cost a little more than a lot of other TVs in that catagory, but it was well worth it. As I unpacked the set, I was impressed with how well protected it was in the box and the unit came out without a single blemish. After a few basic set-up instructions, I turned it on and followed the guide and was blow away with what I saw.Music and sound are as important to me as the picture. Because the TV is in the bedroom I didn't want to take up a lot of space with speakers but wanted decent sound. The reviews I read on Amazon were very good for sound and that was a big reason for my purhase. I was not disappointed.I am also a terrible "after shopper" to be sure I got the best deal and the best product. I was so satisfied with this JVC I'm not interested in looking at anything else. If you a looking for a good value for your money, this is an excellent unit.

4Great after the first night!
By Christopher J. Scott
I just bought this T.V. based on reviews I read on the web that (1) the JVC BlackCrystal edition televisions offered superior video thanks to a partnership with AmTran Electronics, the Hong Kong based R&D/manufacturer of top notch display technology, and (2) the set offered superior audio quality. Here are my initial reactions after an hour of watching the actual T.V.First, setup is really easy, just like the other reviews say. Heck, JVC even ships a philips screwdriver with the set to facilitate the buyer's ability to screw four screws in. Four turns of the screws, align the pedestal, turn another screw and the JVC is ready to go.I connected the set to our cable box using component video cables. This is rather old technology, but it is the technology I had on hand. Once everything was plugged in, the set walked me through a setup program that was easy, until the tuner tried to scan channels. Now, maybe I am an idiot, but the scan found no channels because the cable channels are running through the component viewer. This was a minor annoyance, however, but one that should have been caught by the JVC engineers. Alas, it is just worth mentioning this fact so others do not waste 6 minutes with the tuner trying to find channels that aren't there.Once everything was up and running (about 20 minutes from opening the box to sitting on my couch watching the boob tube), I have to say, the picture on this set rocks! It really is wonderful. The sound system, well, that is another issue. But buyer, don't let my picky ears stop your purchase. Let me explain.I am a music nut. I also have really sharp hearing. So, when a company like JVC plays up the audio quality of a product, I have high expectations. These were not met, but the set does sound better than any other set in our house if just the native speakers are used. So, there is that!Honestly, if you are someone who believes a T.V. should do one thing well -- have top notch video quality -- then JVC BlackCrystal line seems like it is for you. After all, if you want internet connectivity, go buy a Roku for $79, plug it into the JVC, and you just saved about $200 bucks. The picture quality on this set is very good for an LCD screen (we have a plasma in our family room). The sound is better than average. Overall, for $329 I feel like we got a very good T.V. for our living room A.V. cabinet.

5Great Deal!
By Zanderdog
Pros: * Extremely large: 55 Inches* Bright: 450 nit* Standard Inputs, including HDCP-compliant HDMI. Standard power cable: C13-C14 10-15A* Low power footprint from LED backlight: 135w peak* Respectable contrast and gamma out of the box, easily optimized.* Overscan can be completely disabled, independently of the aspect ratio setting (Menu, video, advanced, Overscan: Off)* Superb price for the performance. This is probably the single biggest benefit. You can't get a set this big at this price from anyone else.* Will take a 4:4:4 RGB signal without incident (may not disable it as 4:4:4, haven't checked yet)* Works great with HTPCs, at least ones with AMD GPUs. No HDCP handshake issues, resolution detection issues, or other common Display-Chain issues.* Relatively low latency for having 120Hz smoothing. I estimate about 30-40ms.* Default sharpness value is zero, no sharpening occurs. Can be negative (if you wanted to blur the display I suppose)* Thin!Cons: * 120 Hz smoothing cannot be disabled (maybe a hidden menu, but the standard UI doesn't have an option for it).* Backlight cannot be controlled. (NOTE:"Brightness" adjusts the white point, not the backlight). This means it will always run at FULL; much brighter than needed in an intimate setting.* No user-upgradable firmware. USB-port is for technicians only.* OSD/GUI is minimal, missing many higher-end calibration options. NO CONFIG FOR: Gamma, Backlight, RGB-Gains, CMY-Tints* 120 Hz panel cannot be supplied a 120 Hz signal because the input board doesn't support higher than 60 Hz (Extremely common, not a complaint but an industry criticism)* DOES NOT SUPPORT 24 Hz INPUT. Only option for 24 Hz content is to do a Reverse-3:2 pulldown, then double to 120 Hz.* Very thick bezel, more than an inch.* Flashlighting in corners, not perfectly even (common problem for edge-lit models) but no worse than the competitionOther Thoughts: I normally prefer big-name manufacturers for displays, but I thought I would take a gamble and give Coby a try. I'm glad I did! The LEDTV5536 is a great value. It works great with my stereo and my HTPC. No dead pixels, no physical damage.I've watched several of my favorite films on the LEDTV5536 now. If you are a film purist, this isn't the unit for you. The Reverse-3:2 followed by smoothing to 120Hz causes subtle artifacts on long straight lines (e.g. windows borders on cityscapes, telephone lines, automobile intake grilles.) or during some shots of fast motion. On a positive note, the 120 Hz smoothing produces some of the most lifelike motion I've ever seen from 24 Hz film content. I watched Kubrick's "Eyes Wide Shut", and the many closeups during conversation looked almost real.

4Coby TV Good Value
By Amazon Buyer
The Coby LED 5536 is a good value. The sound is not great - most buyers would probably install their own surround system anyway. The picture is great. When the screen goes dark, you can see some white areas I presume are caused by the LED lights. When the screen is bright with activity the picture is great so it does not hinder the viewing experience a great deal. I higher end TV may be able to go completely "black" but for the price this TV is a great value. Thin, light, great picture and energy efficient.
