82" Mitsubishi First Impressions and Setup
By Frank
Spent yesterday setting up our new Mitsubishi 82" WD-82738. First off, the TV was packed very nicely, no damage and one heck of a big box. Having owned DLP TV's in the past I can truthfully say this is by far the nicest one we have ever owned. The picture is bright and clear and considering how the prices for such a big TV have become so affordable I would rate this TV as a bargain.Things that I had problems with were minor but I am going to mention them. For the first hour after plugging in the TV I didn't have sound. I had a great picture but no matter what I did with the sound settings on the TV it didn't produce sound. Since my only input was my satellite receiver I wasn't sure if it was the receiver or the TV... so I connected it to the Internet. Again, no sound. At this point I was ready to call Mitsubishi when I read a little paragraph on the rear cover page of the install manual.... SYSTEM RESET. Held the power button in for 10 seconds and when the TV restarted... it had SOUND! I think it might be nice if they would have made this a little more obvious... wasted a lot of time diagnosing before I realized that this was something that needed to be done.Only other negative... it says in the Specification Sheet that it has an OPTICAL Digital Audio Output... it's not Optical... or if it is it sure doesn't look like my other optical connections or cables that I already own. But it's getting connected to a surround sound system so I guess this feature isn't that important... but they should change this in the advertising.

In use now for 3 weeks and we love it.
By wd82738
Before buying this TV I did research well for about 3 months before finally buying here on Amazon because of its almost best price and the 30 days return option and free shipping and no taxes! On the AVS Forum I found about 338 pages in their forum about all aspects of this tv, the updates, the mistakes customers can make (e.g. overheating so the TV switches off automatically) .It came with the latest firmware revision, or at least it had it installed when I first checked it. It is connected to the internet via wire, not wireless. The Picture QualityUnderstanding that a DLP is NOT to compare with a LED/LCD.Plasma TV we find the quality of the picture outstanding. Calibrating to our needs was no problem. You need to know that these TV's come preset in a "torch-mode" but that is in no way the best picture the screen can show you. So take your time to find the best settings for you, its all there, you just have to find it and use it!A simple basic basic calibration took me about 30 Minutes. Also worth mentioning is the fact that the PQ is depending on the source. If you TV station sends a SD signal don't expect wonders here. A HD signal will show you a crisp and clear picture and gives us the CINEMA feeling my wife and me so much like. ( she has her masters in cinematography, so no endless discussions about getting this TV at all...what a lucky man I am!)The DesignEven though it is HUGE the footprint is rather small for a DLP. The very small frame gives the impression like the screen goes right to the edge and almost disappeared when watching in a darkened room. The SettingsThis TV has all advanced settings a pro needs for a pro-calibration!The Remotecould be a bit more spacious and with light or so, that's where they saved some money here. It woks but could be better. The lampReplacement is "affordable" for a bout USD 100.00 or so, I will install an additional small computer fan to the housing of the TV to prolong lifetime of the lamp and to prevent from auto-shut-off when temp is raising inside. This could happen when the back is to close to the wall and not enough air circulation is given !the 3D Effect-----not yet tested---The Speakersare just so OK for this TV, a surround sound setup is highly recommended anyway. All in all there is no reason to take one star off.I will update in case there is something to report here.

Bad bulb/ballast
By JC
Have had the TV for ~2 weeks now and haven't been able to watch for more than about an hour tops, and getting shorter. Apparently there is something wrong with the bulb/ballast. The picture just drops out and the green indicator turns solid red. The book says change the bulb. After the run around with Mitsu it took 5 days to get a new bulb and that didn't work. Now I have to wait another ~4-5 days minimum to have a tech come out to look at the set. This was a common problem a couple years ago, would have thought they'd have fixed it by now. Unless I'm just lucky and got the one bad apple.
